Who Knew It Would Change The Way The World Eats

How Instant Ramen Was Invented

Before World War 2, ramen wasn’t instant. But one tinkerer fixed that. Momofuku Ando (1910-2007) was a Japanese inventor and businessman who founded Nissin Food Products Co., Ltd. He also invented instant noodles and Cup Noodles.

Top Gear 2.0 Is Struggling Even Before Airing

It Sounds Like The New Top Gear Is Completely Falling Apart

We haven't even seen the first episode of Chris Evans' new Top Gear, but according to reports the show is failing after being beset by fallings out, an unqualified production staff and meddling bosses

According to reports in The Sun, the show’s team have struggled to put a show together. The main problem seems to arise from the fact that the BBC want new Top Gear to be as safe as possible and not court controversy in the way the old show did. This has resulted in bosses ‘meddling’ with production and not giving Chris Evans the freedom he desires.

It’s no secret that the show’s rebirth has hit some hurdles. Last month it was reported that executive producer Lisa Clark and script editor Tom Ford had both quit the show following news Chris Harris and Sabine Schmitz could take up roles as presenters.

BBC 2 controller Kim Shillinglaw is apparently making life difficult for the teams, as she will not let crews get too carried away with themselves, much to the frustration of “control freak” Evans.

Engineering Explained: 6 Different Types Of Turbocharger And The Advantages Of Each Setup

What's the difference between single, twin, twin-scroll, variable geometry, or even electric turbochargers? What are the advantages of each setup?

1. Single-Turbo

Single turbochargers alone have limitless variability. Differing the compressor wheel size and turbine will lead to completely different torque characteristics. Large turbos will bring on high top-end power, but smaller turbos will provide better low-end grunt as they spool faster. There are also ball bearing and journal bearing single turbos. Ball bearings provide less friction for the compressor and turbine to spin on, thus are faster to spool (while adding cost).

Advantages
  • Cost effective way of increasing an engine’s power and efficiency.
  • Simple, generally the easiest of the turbocharging options to install.
  • Allows for using smaller engines to produce the same power as larger naturally-aspirated engines, which can often remove weight.

Disadvantages
  • Single turbos tend to have a fairly narrow effective RPM range. This makes sizing an issue, as you’ll have to choose between good low-end torque or better high-end power.
  • Turbo response may not be as quick as alternative turbo setups.
2. Twin-Turbo

Just like single turbochargers, there are plenty of options when using two turbochargers. You could have a single turbocharger for each cylinder bank (V6, V8, etc). Alternatively, a single turbocharger could be used for low RPM and bypass to a larger turbocharger for high RPM (I4, I6, etc). You could even have two similarly sized turbos where one is used at low RPM and both are used at higher RPM. On the BMW X5 M and X6 M, twin-scroll turbos are used, one on each side of the V8.

Advantages
  • For parallel twin turbos on ‘V’ shaped engines, the benefits (and drawbacks) are very similar to single turbo setups.
  • For sequential turbos or using one turbo at low RPM and both at high RPM, this allows for a much wider, flatter torque curve. Better low-end torque, but the power won’t taper at high RPM like with a small single turbo.
Disadvantages
  • Cost and complexity, as you’ve nearly double the turbo components.
  • There are lighter, more efficient ways of achieving similar results (as discussed below).

Here's Their #1 Dealer Worldwide With Proof

Ferrari Dealership Named World's Best, Gets 2015 F1 Car

London's primary Ferrari dealership, HR Owen Ferrari, has just been named the best dealership for the Italian company in the world.

The dealer beat over 200 other Ferrari dealerships worldwide and has received a 2015 Ferrari Formula One car, which it will be able to display at its showroom on Old Brompton Road in South Kensington.

The award was given at the Ferrari world dealer conference late last year, with the automaker deciding on a winner after examining every aspect of the business. For example, it assesses the training and expertise of staff, if a dealer offers a demonstrator of every model, customer satisfaction and the typical time needed for servicing a car. H.R. Owen Ferrari managed to score the maximum in all categories.

H.R. Owen's Ferrari brand director James Champion commented: “To become a Ferrari dealership in the first place requires exemplary service in all areas, so to be named the best of an already impeccable set of dealers, is one of our proudest achievements to date.”

The dealership is expected to display the F1 car at numerous events across the year. It's a rolling chassis, which means it isn't fitted with an engine, but still quite a sight to behold.
