Koenigsegg Regera: $1,890,000;

While any Koenigsegg would fit in on this list, we particularly like the Regera for its fascinating drivetrain. Specifically, it doesn't have any gears. Instead, it simply has an engine and a trio of electric motors that drive the wheels directly. Combined they produce about 1,500 horsepower and can run the Regera up to a top speed of 248 mph. Those specs put it right near the Bugatti Chiron, but at a much cheaper price of $1,890,000. On top of that, it has the typical slippery, futuristic Koeniggsegg styling. It's the perfect car for showing up those people that say hybrids are boring nerd-mobiles.

“We were just about finished building his car, and he said ‘I want to see how fast this goes.’ Well, we don’t have a track long enough to do that; I told him any test track is too short, you’d have to shut down a whole road. And he managed to do that.

“So when we heard he had achieved that, we thought we’d better help out, because it’s uncharted territory, and it’s dangerous. We’ve never even driven that fast, so we wanted to be part of it, analyze it, and make sure it was done as safely as possible and that we got as much data out of it as possible.”

Koenigsegg said the company has since been able to introduce a new aerodynamic setting that tunes the ride height, wing angle, shock absorbers and other active aerodynamic features of the car for driving at the limit based on the real-world information it now has. You know, just in case you ever find yourself nearing 280 mph again.

Koenigsegg also said the 1,160 horsepower 5.0-liter twin-turbo V8 Agera RS could go faster with a change to the rev-limiter after the factory driver behind the record-setting car reached it on one of the runs. The car hit a reported max speed of 284.3 mph.

The amazing geeky details of the Koenigsegg Agera RS engine

Koenigsegg has been running a series of posts about how the company designs and assembles the Agera RS. It turns out that even the little engineering details of the Agera RS engine are pretty fascinating, as Koenigsegg recently revealed in a new in-depth look at the 1,160 horsepower engine.

For instance, many other companies add various extra rings and other complexity to their high horsepower engines, but Koenigsegg says that the block and heads are so stiff, the company can use much more basic gaskets. Apparently this adds to long-term reliability since simple head gaskets can handle more heat cycles.

The company also talks about how it creates a more effective catalytic converter system to make such a monstrous engine meet strict emissions standards. To do this, two converters are used. One small one after the turbo wastegate, and a short one with a wide diameter in the main exhaust pipe. At start-up, exhaust is sent only through the wastegate where the small cat heats up fast. This way emissions can be kept low while the main cat is still below operating temperature. This also allows the use of the short, wide cat in the main pipe, which keeps the exhaust free-flowing and the engine making as much power as possible.
