SCCA racing legend and Motor Trend presenter Randy Pobst has driven just about every car on the planet. So when it comes to clearing up the often misunderstood difference between your car’s two primary power ratings—horsepower and torque—he’s definitely up for the job.

Pobst sat down with VINWiki’s Car Stories to explain how these two measurements work. The illustration he came up with is really helpful. He said that torque is the initial punch you feel when you hammer on the accelerator right off the line. Horsepower is how long you are pushed back in your seat.

Porsche Power Pack Option Is Back!

2018 Porsche 911 S gets optional 30-horsepower performance kit

For 2018, the entire Porsche lineup gets a host of new interior and exterior colors and an enhanced range of connectivity options. In addition, 911 S models get an optional performance kit that gives the cars a 30-horsepower bump. Current 911 owners that are feeling left in the dust will be able to retrofit the performance kit to their cars, providing they checked the box for the Sport Chrono package.

The performance package isn't just a simple engine tune. The kit includes larger turbochargers, the Sport Chrono package with dynamic engine mounts, a modified brake cooling system, and a sport exhaust system with two central tailpipes. It's expected to cost about $12,350 in the United States. The kit is available for all new 911 Carrera S, 911 Carrera 4S, and 911 Targa 4S models.

Car Power Defined

What's The Difference Between BHP, HP, kW and PS?

Manufacturers can often pick and choose between power units, so here's a
low-down of what they all equate to

Kilowatts

1kW = 1.341hp

Technically, this form of measurement is the most uniform method of measuring power and is used by every engineer worldwide. Watts are an SI unit (International System) which means they are based around the metre, kilogram, joule and second that make up the metric system. It is a measurement of energy transfer over time, which is the exact job that an internal combustion engine undertakes.

Horsepower

Created by the master of the steam engine – Mr James Watt – this unit of power has somehow still survived to this day as the staple unit of power measurement of new cars where I’m from. Horsepower was deemed equivalent to a horse moving 33,000 pounds of mass one foot in one minute. Now no one knows how big this horse was or whether it was a particularly healthy horse or not…but let’s just go with it. This new-found unit allowed Watt to show direct comparisons between his steam locomotives and the common horse that dominated the haulage business up until the invention of the steam engine.

1PS = 0.986hp

PS stands for pferdestärke which translates simply as horsepower, but it has had some metric tweaking to try and bring good old HP forward into the 21st Century. This metric horsepower has been adopted throughout Europe as the new standard for power measurement and will probably make its way fully into the UK psyche in the not too distant future.

The official engineering standard for metric horsepower is the amount of power needed to lift a 75kg of mass one metre vertically in one second, which – once the conversions from imperial to metric are applied – equates to a 1.4 per cent higher figure than the old imperial units. Manufacturers will often pick and choose between PS and HP depending on whatever figure seems more rounded and presentable. Although I’ve always just seen PS as ‘horsepower plus a few’.

Did You Know - Dyno Edition

How a dyno determines how much horsepower a car has from the tires spinning. 

The simplest type uses a(very large) weighted wheel of a known weight, and the engine’s ability to accelerate that weight to determine power. That’s how a “mustang dyno works. Other dynos use a known load, either an amount of water pumped, or an amount of electricity generated to find out the amount of power created. The mechanisms behind both methods are much more complicated, but are generally accepted as better, and more useful results, since they can be applied “steady state”. Meaning an engineer can find out how much power is produced at any given rpm continuously.

The Way You Think About Horsepower Is Completely Wrong

Horsepower is first and foremost a marketing tool

First things first, let's talk about what horsepower actually is. In reality, it's nothing more than a number meant to define an engine's capacity for work. The concept of comparing machines to horses was refined into a scientific formula by James Watt -- one of a handful of people who spearheaded the industrial revolution with his work on the steam engine in the mid-1700s, and the guy for whom watts (as in kilowatts) are named. Watt needed a way to market his steam engine to people who normally used horses to get stuff done. Through observing how much work a horse could do and applying some relatively simple math (HP= (Torque X RPM)/5,250), the concept of horsepower became marketing gold.

HP is actually pretty boring, once you get past the novelty of acceleration

The very first time you floor a car with 700 horsepower, it feels like a jump to hyperspace. Your sense of balance is thrown off, and your brain struggles to keep up with the rate at which the scenery is becoming increasingly blurred. The second time? It's still cool, but the more you do it, the more it becomes routine. I would know. I've been there.

After you've put your right foot down enough times, that kind of acceleration becomes routine, and you realize there are more things in life than horsepower.

The Horespower Wars Of The Late 90's/Early 2000's Was The Golden Age

How long will the 'golden age' of performance last?

High-powered sports and luxury cars were everywhere at the New York Auto Show, prompting the obvious question for enthusiasts: How long will this golden age of performance last?

Industry leaders have some time before regulations elevate the Corporate Average Fuel Economy level in 2025. Even then, they expect cars rippling with power to survive in some form.

"Is it the end of an era," I don't think so," said Ola Källenius, Daimler AG board member for Mercedes-Benz cars marketing and sales. "That performance element of individual mobility I don't think will ever go away."

Källenius, who oversaw the company's AMG division from 2010-2013, expects it to continue to grow. Last year, AMG sold a record 68,875 units around the world, an increase of 44.6 percent over 2014, with strong growth in the US, China, and Germany.

Still, there's always the potential for gas to spike, and pending fuel economy regulations are looming. That could lead AMG to add electrification to its products, Källenius said, pointing to the electric SLS as a test case.

Chevy is also thinking ahead, said Al Oppenheiser, chief engineer of the Camaro. He wouldn't bite when asked about electrification for the Camaro (he did say "never say never"), but admitted in 2025 "it's going to be pretty tough to sell V8s."

For now, things are rosy for muscle cars, and Chevy confidently showcased the 640-hp Camaro ZL1 in coupe and convertible form in New York. "I think that this is truly the golden age of performance," Oppenheiser said.

It's hard to disagree.
