Did You Know - Volvo Edition
This Is The Surprisingly Obvious Reason Why Volvos Have That Diagonal Bar On Their Grilles
Volvo’s ÖV 4, built in 1927, was nicknamed ‘Jakob’ and was the first vehicle to bear the Volvo name. Jakob had a sort of flawed birth; when the first one was to be driven out of the factory, it went backwards, due to an incorrectly installed rear axle gear. Also, as a convertible made for the Swedish climate, it may not have had the best body style for its target market.
Still, it was the first Volvo, and as such it wore the Volvo iron mark, designed by the painter and designer Helmer MasOlle. MasOlle wanted the badge to be centered in the open square air-intake area of the radiator housing.
The radiator housing had no proper grille or screen in front of the radiator itself, so the logo, not being able to defy gravity, needed a support of some sort. In order to most easily locate it at the center, it was decided to use a diagonal bar from one corner of the radiator shell to the other, and mount the badge on that.
That’s it. That’s why Volvos to this day have that diagonal bar—because it was the easiest way to locate the badge in the center of the radiator.

4. These Swedes take coffee seriously.
That pride in Sweden extends to some of the country's other products. Swedes drink more coffee per capita than almost anyone else (it keeps them awake during the long, dark winter). The mid-afternoon fika coffee break is otherwise-industrious Sweden's version of the Spanish siesta.
Volvo is so enthusiastic about its hometown's best-known coffee roaster, Da Matteo, that it flies a couple of baristas and a lot of coffee beans to major international auto shows and passes out joe on press days. There's a lot to get your attention at an auto show, but even jaded attendees will agree that Volvo brews the best cup.
Consumers seem to think the same, even though the coffee served at your local dealer probably came from a Keurig cup. Sales are way up this year, buoyed by the brand's hot XC90 (admittedly, its other models aren't fairing quite as well). A host of new products are on the way, and for once Volvo has something to sell other than safety.

Hans Bååth (pronounced "boat"), Polestar's marketing director, said, "These cars should take you to everywhere you want to go, and you should be able to utilize the performance 365 days a year, not just, 'Now I'm brave enough to push the button.'" When we asked for a clarification that an American mind could quickly comprehend, he said, "I'm going to be faster on Angeles Crest in my Volvo than in your Hellcat on a rainy day."
