Queen may have to move for Buckingham Palace repairs

London (AFP) - Queen Elizabeth II may have to move out of Buckingham Palace to allow for much-needed repairs including taking out asbestos, replacing ageing boilers and rewiring, royal officials said on Wednesday.

"One option is for the palace to be vacated," a royal source said, giving one estimate for the refurbishment of the 18th-century building at £150 million (211 million euros, $237 million).

"We're getting experts to look at these scenarios," the source said, adding that the royal family's continued presence would depend on whether the building work was done in stages or all at once.

The 10 Hot Dog Commandments With Doug Sohn

3. Thy wiener shall be made of meat
  • For carnivores, beef, pork, veal, or some combination thereof are preferred. As with all meats, the source is important. Your local butcher is usually going to be your best bet and there are certainly acceptable brands in your supermarket. In Chicago, just use Vienna Beef. They're the best.
7. The ends of thy hot dog can hang past the ends of thy bun, but not the other way around
  • And thy bun shall be fresh. Steamed or toasted is preferred. Some people like the side cut, others the top cut. I guess this is a regional thing. Buns must be sturdy enough to hold the wiener and toppings without falling apart.
9. Thou shall treat the hot dog as thou would treat the finest fish, fowl, or expensive food item
  • Love, care, and attention to detail shall not be ignored. Having said that, hot dogs are very forgiving and will last a pretty long time in a steam tray or the indirect heat part of the grill.

Car Guy Politician And Californians Make Retro License Plates Happen

In 2012, California Assemblyman Mike Gatto introduced and passed a bill to bring back three vintage license plate designs if they could just collect 7,500 orders for each. The yellow-on-black style, originally issued from 1963 to ’69, made the cut and will start shipping this month.

“Aside from not salting our roads, California doesn’t often do much for automobile enthusiasts,” Gatto said in a press release, probably unintentionally giving us his best attempt at understatement. “This is an easy way for the state to enable everyone from the backyard restorer, to the nostalgic, to the purchaser of a retro-styled automobile to add that extra bit of detail for those of us who appreciate the classic era of automobile design.”

Did You Know - City Buses Edition

Why do buses show up in threes?

Have you ever been waiting at a bus stop for what felt like an eternity, only for two or three buses to show up at the same time? After such a long wait, it can be infuriating to see the second one practically empty. This phenomenon is actually quite well-known in the world of traffic theory, and an interesting article from City Metric gets to the bottom of the causes and some possible solutions.

The key to getting busses to spread back out during the day comes down to the difficult duty of managing chaos. Since the drivers are on a closed loop, it only takes a short delay for another vehicle on the same route to close the gap. From there, more people are left waiting at stops, which causes things to move even slower. The situation just keeps getting worse until you see a procession of public transportation coming down the road.

Using a simple game that you can try, the City Metric piece goes into detail about many of the factors that cause these frustrating delays. While it's possible to improve the situation, completely fixing the problem is largely impossible due to the way our roads work. Give the whole article a read to better understand why. The explanation unfortunately doesn't make waiting for a bus any easier.
