This Restaurants Closure Saddens Me

Landry’s Seafood House Shutters on the Westside

Even more changes for the local Landry’s empire

Even those who never dined at Landry’s Seafood House can’t miss the neon signage facing its more famous neighbor, Palace Station resort. Self-described as the “flagship restaurant” concept in the Landry's Inc. portfolio and despite years of service, the steak and seafood restaurant has now shuttered on Sahara Avenue.

A replacement for the substantial restaurant space has not been announced.

The closure follows a series of local overhauls by the corporation. Both locations of Joe’s Crab Shack have now shuttered, less than two months after the chain was acquired by Landry’s. And McCormick & Schmick’s vanished at the Hughes Center in September, to be quickly replaced by moving another of its restaurants, Claim Jumper, over from Town Square.

A Hidden Gem On Historical Grounds

LA’s Safest Diner Is a Hidden Tribute to the Boys in Blue 4 comments

Inside the secret police academy coffee shop you didn’t know you were missing

The safest restaurant in all of Los Angeles has got to be the Los Angeles Police Revolver and Athletic Club Cafe. Tucked up into the Elysian Park hills near Dodger Stadium — and on the grounds of the LA Police Academy — the throwback coffee shop is part diner, part coffee takeaway, part ode to the hardworking police department of Los Angeles. And, as you might expect, just about everybody inside is packin’ heat.

In terms of menu, expect the usual breakfast all day. You can get eggs and bacon, a breakfast sandwich, pancakes, and a DIY breakfast burrito portion. The lunch arrangement kicks off at 10 a.m. daily (breakfast is all day), offering sandwiches, salads, and a patty melt. As always, black coffee is in high demand.

As ever before, the Cafe remains packed with cops, recruits, detectives, you name it. In fact, it’s rare that someone from outside the academy would step foot inside the compound, though it is open to the public daily from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. (closed weekends).

To access the coffee shop, head past the security station, up the exterior stairs, and straight on back to find the rocky facade of the diner on your right-hand side. Then all you have to do is settle in and enjoy, knowing full well there’s not likely to be any funny business here.

I Highly Recommend These Places

The 10 Best Special-Occasion Restaurants in Los Angeles

1. Providence
  • Is it too obvious to put Providence at No. 1 on this list? Sometimes there's a reason for obvious choices, and that is because they're ... well, the obvious choice. There are only a handful of restaurants in Los Angeles that aim for the same heights Providence does, and perhaps none that achieve those lofty aims quite so well. Michael Cimarusti’s seafood-focused fine-dining standard-bearer excels at the formal service that much of the restaurant world has abandoned. There’s a lot of joy to be found on the plate as well. No kitchen does the flurry of amuse-bouches as well as Cimarusti and crew, from a darling taco within a nasturtium leaf to cigars made from Wagyu beef that come presented in a cigar box. Ultra-fresh (and always sustainable) seafood, such as Santa Barbara spot prawns or Norwegian red king crab, is presented elegantly and simply. During the winter, you can get perfectly cooked soft eggs (or risotto, or pasta — we prefer the eggs) showered in an obscene amount of black truffle. You could come here for all kinds of reasons — for the cheese cart, for the wine list, for the opulence of the room. For a birthday or anniversary or the celebration of something momentous, no place in town does "special" quite so well.
  • 5955 Melrose Ave., Hollywood. (323) 460-4170, providencela.com.
6. Spago
  • There are plenty of glam Beverly Hills dining rooms where blowing money among the movie stars is possible, but few of them have a whole lot of substance beyond that sheen of opulence. Spago is the great exception. The Beverly Hills restaurant that launched Wolfgang Puck’s empire is still among L.A.’s most iconic dining experiences, despite (and perhaps because of) a revamp that modernized its look and feel a couple of years back. With its sleek white-and-black dining room and glassed-in patio, Spago remains one of the best spots in town not only for celebrity sightings and spying on Hollywood dealmaking but also for luxury dining. Chef Lee Hefter and chef de cuisine Tetsu Yahagi are presenting a menu that straddles the line between tradition and invention, fulfilling the wishes of a diner wanting a prime côte de boeuf for two with Armagnac peppercorn sauce, or the type who might wish for a bincho-grilled black cod with hijiki rice salad, avocado, kimchi endive and gochujang aioli. Take advantage of one of the country’s greatest wine cellars, with 30,000-plus bottles including an astonishing selection of Austrian wines. This is a place for Champagne, for celebrations, for remembering the excesses of the city we live in and how exhilarating those excesses can be.

You Will Not Regret Eating Here

The Best Hawaiian Food in Los Angeles

Gardena Bowl Coffee Shop
  • This bowling alley restaurant is famous for its comfort classics — don't leave without ordering fried rice.
King's Hawaiian
  • This is mostly a bakery (you've seen its Portuguese-style buns at the grocery store), so unsurprisingly the desserts are a highlight — especially the technicolor Paradise cake. But the huge savory menu incorporates everything from plate lunches to luau staples such as Kalua pig and lau lau (pork and/or fish steamed in taro leaves).

I Walked In & Immediately Recognized It From The Movie Scene

Go On Location: Famous Film & TV Restaurants in L.A.

One of L.A.’s oldest operating eateries, the Pacific Dining Car was founded in 1921 by Fred and Grace Cook. Inspired by a restaurant they’d visited in New York, the couple created a replica train dining car to house their small steakhouse, which moved to its current location at 6th and Witmer in 1923. Though Fred and Grace have since passed away, the restaurant is still owned and operated by their family to this day. Open 24 hours a day, the Pacific Dining Car was an early favorite of the Hollywood set, with Mae West, Louella Parsons and Mickey Cohen counted as regulars. In more recent years, Nicolas Cage, Johnny Depp and novelist James Ellroy have been known to drop in.
The richly-colored interior has been immortalized numerous times on screen, most famously in the 2001 crime drama, "Training Day." In the restaurant’s Pacific Northwest Room, Denzel Washington meets with the Three Wise Men and recommends the Baseball Steak. In the 1974 noir classic "Chinatown," the exterior briefly masks as the Pig ‘n Whistle in a series of photographs that J.J. Gittes (Jack Nicholson) looks through. The steakhouse also popped up in 2008’s "Street Kings" and 2011’s "Rampart."

Another Unfortunate Sign Of The Times

The Original Marie Callender's Restaurant Has Closed Its Doors After 52 Years

Marie Callender's very first coffee and pie shop in the city of Orange turned its lights off for the last time, according to the OC Register. Marie Callender's son, Don, opened this location on Tustin Street in 1964 and now a sign on the door states that the restaurant has closed due to "the end of our lease." The note also detailed: "Thank you for all the love and support. We are very thankful to have shared many meals (& pies), holidays and memories with you."

Since 1998, the family restaurant chain has diminished from 156 Southern California restaurants to just 61 at the present. Thankfully for those who grew up on Marie Callender pies, there are still locations in Mar Vista, Northridge, Sherman Oaks, West LA, and Redondo Beach, to name a few.

It Sucks That This Famed Place Has To Close

Iconic Restaurant Yamashiro Set to Close on June 12 in Hollywood

If all goes as currently planned, June 12 looks to be chopping block day for Yamashiro, the iconic hillside restaurant that’s been in continuous operation in Hollywood for more than 100 years. What’s next for the compound — including the restaurant, the pagoda bar, and all that land — is still to be determined, however.

Staff at the restaurant have been advising diners that June 12 is the likely shutdown date for the iconic eatery, a timeline corroborated by sources elsewhere. Apparently, the operator behind the existing Yamashiro restaurant decided to agree to drop his lawsuit over who would maintain control of the eatery, agreeing to sell off all of the assets from the space as well as the name — which pegs June 12 as the day everything changes hands.
