A real enthusiast, Tim is the kind of guy that takes his Subaru WRX ice racing. Clearly, he isn't playing around.

This past week I was leafing through my Facebook feed and I came across a picture he snapped at the prototype drive of the all-new Toyota Supra. And, there was a nugget he noted about the Supra no one has pointed out — at all.

If you take a peek of this side-by-side shot, you'll note that the Supra is actually about the same size as the Toyota 86. And the 86 is a small two-door vehicle by modern standards.

As Tim points out, the Supra isn't going to be a "big" car like its elder.

Porsche 911 (993) Carrera

Porsche’s 993 generation 911 Carrera tops our list. It’s practically the ultimate ‘90s dream car of all. There is one in Beverly Hills that sells for only $50,000. This Carrera was a ’95 model that travelled for at least 76,000 miles.

This coupe is packed with 270 hp 3.6L engine and is mated with a 6-speed manual transmission. The 993 convertibles could come cheaper while a GT2 version Carrera could be priced at $1M.

Toyota Supra

Toyota Supra is also one of the epic nineties cars that we love to this day. A brand new Supra Turbo costs more than $40,000 in 1990. Then, in 1993 until 2002, the Supra came out with its 4th generation model, which comes with a 320 hp twin turbo 2JZ engine. The prices ranged from $100,000-$120,000 back then.

Acura NSX

Honda also makes it to the list with the Acura NSX. How can we forget one of the best ‘90s cars? The NSX was the only car that intimidated Ferrari when it first came out.

As for the price, the NSX costs more than $60,000 in the nineties. But now, you can have one for as low as $30,000. Still a substantial resale value after all these years.

4. MK3 Toyota Supra Turbo

This MK3 Toyota Supra Turbo, in stock trim, is quite formidable on its own. It also shares the same basic platform as the younger Supra in all the ways that matter. Turbocharged 3.0 liter inline 6 engine ? Check. Ridiculously overbuilt manual gearbox? Check. Insane power handling capability and lots of aftermarket support? Check and double check. While this car doesn’t share the MKIV’s more contemporary aesthetic flair, it has a stuck-in-the-80s charm that is more nostalgia machine than it is forward-thinking science project.

You can also swap over the entire drivetrain from a newer Supra into it relatively easily and have every single advantage of the newer car, with the addition of driving something with an available red velour interior. Even with prices rising slightly, you can still find good examples in the four figure range, and for the price of a fair-to-middlin’ MKIV Supra , you can have a world-beating modified MK3. Food for thought.

Organisers of Japfest carried out a survey to ask its fan base which Japanese car deserves to be recognized as the most iconic. Nissan’s legendary Skyline took the top spot.
