The 2019 Mercedes-AMG C43 Gets Bigger Turbos And Is Basically An Audi From 10 Years Ago

Mercedes just updated the C43 AMG to give its 3.0-liter V6 larger turbochargers, more boost and more power. Things are up 23 horsepower to a total of 385, which basically makes this the sports sedan you wished you could buy a decade ago from Audi.

Here’s the key stuff from Mercedes, right from the company’s press release:

The V6 biturbo engine boasts a high power output combined with low fuel consumption and emissions. The high power output is in part courtesy of separate, larger turbochargers (max. charge pressure 1.1 bar). Installed close to the engine, the two turbochargers are especially spontaneous in their response. The AMG power unit can be identified by the engine cover with red aluminium insert and AMG lettering.

What’s funny about that is it’s basically the same as the B8 Audi S4 that debuted back in 2008. The size of the cars are within an inch of each other in all main dimensions, they weigh about the same (around 3,700 pounds) and they both run boosted 3.0-liter V6s that make horsepower in the high 300 range and they both have standard all-wheel drive.

The AMG E63 S Wagon went on sale in October 2017 as one of 22 AMG models in the U.S. that have standard all-wheel drive (out of a total 40 AMG variants). Although some of the well-known SUV models such as the G-Class, GLS, or GLE usually come to mind when referring to all-wheel drive, the E-Class Wagon has become synonymous for all-wheel drive capability, with a very exclusive customer base.

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class wagon attracts one of the brand's highest median household incomes, with 23% of its U.S. customers being located between the New York and Boston metropolitan areas, and 22% in California alone. For more than five years, Mercedes-Benz has been without German competition in this size and class.

The customer base of the AMG high-performance variant of the E-Class Wagon is even more exclusive. As the modern successors to the single S124 AMG Hammer wagon built at AMG's independent U.S. headquarters in Westmont, IL in 1986 near Chicago, every generation of AMG E-Class wagons have always been special-order models in the U.S., never exceeding triple-digit sales. 2009 Mercedes-AMG E63 S

Turbocharging had been the way forward for AMG ever since announcing in 2006 that it was done with superchargers. The power gains have since gone through the roof. Badged as a 63 for heritage reasons but stuffed with a 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8, the 2009 E63 came in two versions; the 577bhp, 590lb ft standard car and the truly mental 607bhp, 664lb ft tyre destroyer simply badged as the ‘S’. Even the standard car smashed through 62mph in 4.5 seconds.

By this point, and it feels very much like recent memory, AMG was developing engines that sounded and felt almost life-changing in their bizarrely over-the-top German joie de vive, whatever joie de vive translates to in German. The E63 of this era was a special thing, but right now it’ll cost you over £30,000 for sure.

AMG’s first exclusive dealership opened in Tokyo back in January alongside the announcement that one would open its doors in Sydney as well. Now, AMG boss Tobias Moers has confirmed that Shanghai, Abu Dhabi, the UK and an undisclosed city in Germany will also get AMG showrooms.

If these dealerships follow the lead of the Tokyo location, they can be expected to house the brand’s most popular models and will offer a distinctive buying experience in facilities inspired by the brand’s focus on performance.

The performance division of Mercedes-Benz is currently enjoying its most successful period to date and in 2016, saw global sales skyrocket by 44 per cent to almost 100,000. According to Autocar, sales are expected to again rise by double digits this year and will steady out until the company’s next-generation models arrive in 2020 and beyond.

Mercedes performance brand's director explains expansion, from line-built engines to the Hypercar.

AMG - a car tuner company founded by (and named for) Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, and for Aufrecht's German hometown of Großaspach. AMG just celebrated its 50th birthday.

The company made a big splash early on in 1971 with its 6.8-liter "Red Pig" Mercedes-Benz S-Class-based racecar, which won its class at Spa and placed second overall. Their "Hammer" E-Class of the mid-1980s was the fastest sedan on the market and could smoke contemporary Corvettes and Countaches. And the bored-out 12-cylinder AMGs of the Aughties created outrageously effortless cruising in S, CL, and SL classes.

But AMG's modern cars put all of these achievements to shame. Today's AMGs demonstrate remarkable enhancements in potency and performance - the one-off "Red Pig" racecar made 420 horsepower; the company will soon routinely build self-driving station wagons that produce in excess of 600 hp and rocket to 60 mph in just over 3 seconds. And as a wholly owned go-fast subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz, they're enthusiastically spreading driving pleasure across the Mercedes product line. There are now over 40 separate AMG models.

People love BMW E30 M3s and people, in this one case, are not wrong. But thinking that an E30 is “special” in 2016 is like telling people you “discovered” Arcade Fire in 2016. It’s over, man.

It’s therefore with great pleasure that I can announce that someone paid $51,000 fucking American U.S. dollars for a goddamn Mercedes minivan when they could have had an E30 M3 for about $33,500.
 
America made the right choice. No matter how much purer the E30 feels or how many Frank Ocean videos it ends up in or any of that shit, having an R63 AMG minivan is just better. And weirder. And more special.

My faith in humanity isn’t restored, but it’s coming back just a little bit.

2018 Mercedes-AMG E63 debuts in LA with 603 horsepower 

Drift Mode, guys. The E63 has a Drift Mode.

The most powerful version yet of Mercedes-AMG's 4.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 sits under the E63S' hood, with 603 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque. Paired with a 4Matic all-wheel-drive system that promises totally variable front-to-rear torque – there's no mention of lateral torque vectoring – Mercedes' new super sedan is faster off the line than the 640-hp Cadillac CTS-V. The E63S is 0.4 seconds faster to 60, doing the deed in just 3.3 seconds to the Caddy's 3.7 seconds (though the CTS-V's 200-mile-per-hour top speed dwarfs the E63S' 186-mph electronic limit). And if you buy the standard car? Don't worry, the base E63 can still beat the Cadillac with its 563 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. The run to 60 takes just 3.4 seconds, although it hits its electronic limit at only 155. Regardless of model, Mercedes stuck with its nine-speed AMG Speedshift multi-clutch transmission.

Beyond leaving claw marks in the pavement, the new 4Matic system has another trump card that we heard rumors about recently – Drift Mode. Standard on the E63S, drivers select the "Race" drive program, switch off stability control, activate the transmission's manual mode, and voila, big, smokey slides. Besides knowing how to activate it, details on going sideways are scarce. Mercedes claims Drift Mode turns the E63 into a "purely rear-wheel drive" vehicle, which sounds great, but we're wondering if this is entirely a function of the 4Matic system, or if there is some other trickery at play. No matter how AMG pulls it off, this sounds like a good deal – you have the all-wheel drive to maximize grip in a straight line, while a push of the button will allow the same kind of tail-out antics rear-drive owners experience whether they want it or not.

Mercedes will debut both the E63 and E63S at next month's Los Angeles Auto Show, with US sales to begin next summer.

The Dime Racing Edition AMG GT is a modified version of Mercedes-AMG's hot coupe, and it's available from Mercedes dealers across the USA 

I doubt many people look at the Mercedes-AMG GT R’s 577bhp output and think: “Hmmmm, you know what? That’s a bit limp.” But if you are that power obsessed, there is solution courtesy of Dime Racing - a US-based AMG customer racing team.

What Dime will do is take a standard AMG GT S and its pathetic 503bhp, boosting it to 735bhp. No details have been given as to how, but we do know that you get new wheels, shouty aerodynamic bits, an upgraded cooling system and beefier suspension as part of the deal. The result is the car you see here: the Dime Racing Edition AMG GT.

So far, so predictable, and on the face of it there’s little to separate Dime’s tuning package to the plethora of AMG GT upgrade options out there. Until you get to the way it’s sold that is: it’s available through “select Mercedes AMG dealers” across the USA, and it’ll even “carry a bumper-to-bumper warranty.”
