L.A.'s Hidden Historical Spots

Six Things You Didn't Know Were Kept in Los Angeles

1) Prohibition-era Smuggling Tunnels

The Prohibition era saw the population of Los Angeles double, from just over half a million to 1.2 million people. Maybe it's because everyone was drunk.

There were something like 11 miles of service tunnels underneath downtown L.A., allowing bootleggers to supply illicit speakeasies with booze while the cops, the prosecutors and even City Hall all looked the other way.

Today, the tunnels are officially closed to the public. But if you're super sneaky (and careful!) you can explore them a bit. One the east side of Hill Street, at the northwest tip of Grand Park, you'll find a tiny sign for the Hall of Records. Take the elevator down to the bottom, and look for the words "SOUND HORN" painted on the concrete walls. There are other exits feeding out to other government buildings. On rainy days, some government employees use the tunnels to stay dry.

5) The largest section of the Berlin Wall in the United States

Since the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, sections of it have ended up all over the world. The largest portion in the U.S. sits on, of all places, the front lawn of the SBE Entertainment building (formerly the Variety building) at 5900 Wilshire Blvd.

The 10 concrete slabs were painted by four different artists and donated by the Wende Museum.

6) Gandhi's Ashes
To appease the mourning Indian public, steel urns containing Gandhi's ashes were sent all over the country for public services meant to end in their dispersal in local bodies of water. This does not seem to have happened in every case, and portions of the ashes were kept by government agents and friends of Gandhi. Some made their way to the Aga Khan, who enshrined them at his palace in Pune India. [Paramahansa] Yogananda in Los Angeles, who had a friendship with Gandhi spanning decades (he is said to have initiated Gandhi into the practice of Kriya Yoga in 1930), received his portion of remains from Dr. V.M. Nawle, a journalist who was friends with both men.

SHOCKER? Tesla's Vehicles ARE NOT As Green As You May Think . . . . .

According to a Wired piece that launched before yesterday's Model 3 unveil, Tesla's vehicles aren't as green as the general public may think. This is hardly a surprise to anyone with a brain that's been doing some thinking since electric vehicles became real.

Essentially, the research conducted by Devonshire Research Group shows that the manufacturing process as well as the batteries are not particularly green. No kidding, boys and girls. What it does conclude, however, is while Teslas EVs may not be the end all, be all answer for environmentalists, they are less damaging to the environment that its gasoline-powered competition.

Basically, EVs aren't there yet but they're heading in the right direction.

Los Angeles Dodgers: The Shock Top Bratwurst

If you’re smart enough to pick up on the fact that The Shock Top Bratwurst got its name from the famous brewery, you’d be correct, because the L.A. Dodgers teamed up with the beer to come up with this brat.

Infused with Shock Top beer, this spicy pork bratwurst is served on a buttered and grilled lobster roll with caramelized onions and spicy brown mustard, making it appear to be heaven on earth if you ask me.

I've Always Wondered What That Stood For - FFCA

Gruden wears his heart on his sleeve, and also his title. The FFCA stitched on the polo he wears for the show stands for the Fired Football Coaches Association, which, believe it or not, is a real thing. “When Jon was fired by the Bucs in 2009, he was crushed,” says Mark Arteaga, Gruden’s close friend and member of his staff in Oakland and Tampa. “Devastated. It was the first time anyone on our staff had been fired, and we didn’t know what to do with ourselves.” And so for three days a week, at 6 a.m., the staff assembled in a borrowed office at the St. Pete Times Forum, where Gruden would lead mock-coaches meetings. Part of it was that Gruden didn’t know what else to do with his time; part of it was so that the staff could stay fresh if they were ever given another opportunity.
The group jokingly called itself the Fired Football Coaches Association, and the name stuck. Eventually Gruden rented his own office, an 800-square-foot space in a strip mall. The meetings were open to anyone who wanted to talk shop. Other fired coaches, like Mike Sherman, stopped in to stay fresh. Local high school coaches would workshop with Gruden, as would Division I football staffs, usually as a pit stop on recruiting trips. The FFCA has since upgraded its digs, and has expanded into a charitable group that provides support and financial assistant to high school football programs, in addition to being a self-styled “football think-tank.”

A Few Stories To Help You Get To Know Michael Jordan Better

“Bejeweled Demigod”

He’s obsessed with the iPad game Bejeweled. He passed level 100 so he’s officially a “Bejeweled Demigod”

Steve Kerr

The two guards were matched up in a scrimmage. It was intense. Jordan had heard the critics after the Bulls’ playoff loss to the Orlando Magic and intended to silence them. He averaged 26.9 points in the final 17 regular-season games after coming out of retirement, but shot only 41 percent from the field. The postseason defeat to the Magic in the conference semifinals, his first series loss since 1990, had some suggesting his best years were behind him. At 32 years old, Jordan was hell-bent on proving otherwise. It was palpable in every drill, every time down the floor.

He and Kerr talked trash on a couple of possessions, and then it escalated.

“I took exception to something he said,” Kerr says. “So I was talking back and I don’t think Michael appreciated that … and we got in the lane and he gave me a forearm shiver to the chest and I pushed him back. And next thing you know, our teammates were pulling him off of me.”

The 6-foot-3, 175-pound Kerr wound up with a black eye. He threw some punches before it was broken up, too.

“I knew that if we were in an actual fight he could actually probably kill me if he wanted to,” Kerr says. “It was more just I’m going to stand up for myself.”

Kerr and Jordan didn’t have much of a relationship at that point. They’d played together for only two months. Before Jordan left the arena that day, then-Bulls coach Phil Jackson — who perhaps would have prevented the tiff if he wasn’t in his office doing a media conference call, Kerr suggests — told the superstar he had to speak with Kerr that night.

Jordan made the call within the hour and apologized. They talked some more at practice the next day and moved on.

Robert Parish

In one of his first practices with the Bulls, Parish botched one of the plays and was amused to find Jordan jawing at him just inches from his face.

‘I told him, “I’m not as enamored with you as these other guys. I’ve got some rings too,”’ Parish recalled. ‘At that point he told me, “I’m going to kick your ass.” I took one step closer and said, “No, you really aren’t.” After that he didn’t bother me.’

Not Bigger Than Scottie

Scottie and Michael used to compete on everything. Jordan used always claim his hands were bigger, but they weren’t. Scottie was very blessed down below. And that killed Michael. Johnny said, “you should have seen the girls pippen had waiting for him everywhere we went. Madonna used to pick him up in a limo with a hot tub every time we went to L.A. Michael used to tell Madonna he could satisfy her better, to which Madonna would tell him “not a chance.””

Jordan 1 - Sir Nick 0

Jordan Spieth, Nick Faldo shared some fun outside Augusta National Tuesday morning

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Nick Faldo and Jordan Spieth shared a playful moment driving into Augusta National Golf Club this morning.

Traffic along Washington Road being it's traditional moving jungle, the two Masters champions arrived, after sordid nuisances, at the club's front gate jockeying for the honor of pulling in first.

They rolled down their respective windows, and, according to one passenger, their exchange went something like this:

Spieth: "Hey, you know, I'm the defending champion."

Faldo: "Three to one." Meaning Faldo has three green jackets to the one Spieth won last year in a record-tying 18 under par 270.

Spieth: "I haven't even played in three."

Faldo let the young Texan go first.

This year is the 20th anniversary of Faldo's epic rally from six strokes back to defeat Greg Norman for his third green jacket and the last of his six major titles.
