Nissan Has Turned its Back on NISMO, And That's a Damn Shame 

The brand needs a total overhaul of their once outstanding enthusiast car offerings.

NISMO, the performance arm of Nissan, is in a rut. Right now, NISMO offers a branded upgrade package for four of its parent brand's models: the 370Z, GT-R, Juke, and now, the Sentra. There was a time when Nissan's performance badges meant something significant, a time when the 300ZX Turbo was a blinding rocket of a car, a time when the Sentra SE-R Spec V was the best kept secret in economy sport compacts, a time when Skyline GT-R existed. Et cetera, et cetera.

Those times appear to be long gone, and Nissan—the manufacturer of the top-selling SUV in America (that'd be the Rogue)—seems to be treating the NISMO badge with a disregard that would suggest a good enthusiast car is no longer worth the effort.

Potentially the peak of the Skyline road car family, this limited-edition GT-R completely reworked the R33 using inspiration from the GT-R LM that had raced in the 1994 and 1995 Le Mans 24 Hours. Swapping out the RB26DETT for the RB-X GT2 produced by tuning company Reinik, displacement was increased to 2.8 litres due to boring and stroking.

This made for 395bhp and 347lb ft of torque which was combined with carbon driveshafts and a carbonfibre rear wing making for the most extreme road-going Skyline yet. Considering the RB-X engine proved itself at Le Mans and Pikes Peak, the 400R has some solid motorsport DNA within it and as only 44 examples were ever produced, you’ll struggle to find one for much less than $85,000 (£68,000).

Nissan has pulled the plug on its troubled front-wheel-drive Le Mans racer, the GT-R LM NISMO.

In a statement released today, the Japanese brand said: “Today, Nissan announced that it will withdraw its LMP1 entry from the 2016 FIA World Endurance Championship. Nissan entered LMP1 in the 2015 season with an innovative new, and bold concept, with the ambition to compete at the front of the field. The teams worked diligently to bring the vehicles up to the desired performance levels. However, the company concluded that the program would not be able to reach its ambitions and decided to focus on developing its longer-term racing strategies.

Nissan Gives Up On GT-R LM Nismo Edurance Car After Half Season

Nissan's absence from the Nurgburgring, and perhaps the rest of this year's World Endurance Championship, is arguably of little consequence as far as the future of the ambitious GT-R LM programme goes.

What might the GT-R LM NISMO achieve should it race again in 2015? Very little, I would suggest.

That's because the GT-R LM cannot race this season in the form in which it was conceived: it has been homologated in the two-megajoule hybrid class, rather than the planned 8MJ division, and that's where it has to stay until next season.

For that reason, it has no chance of being able to show the potential of which its creator, Ben Bowlby, and Nissan global motorsport boss Darren Cox have talked so effusively.
