A Hidden Gem On Historical Grounds

LA’s Safest Diner Is a Hidden Tribute to the Boys in Blue 4 comments

Inside the secret police academy coffee shop you didn’t know you were missing

The safest restaurant in all of Los Angeles has got to be the Los Angeles Police Revolver and Athletic Club Cafe. Tucked up into the Elysian Park hills near Dodger Stadium — and on the grounds of the LA Police Academy — the throwback coffee shop is part diner, part coffee takeaway, part ode to the hardworking police department of Los Angeles. And, as you might expect, just about everybody inside is packin’ heat.

In terms of menu, expect the usual breakfast all day. You can get eggs and bacon, a breakfast sandwich, pancakes, and a DIY breakfast burrito portion. The lunch arrangement kicks off at 10 a.m. daily (breakfast is all day), offering sandwiches, salads, and a patty melt. As always, black coffee is in high demand.

As ever before, the Cafe remains packed with cops, recruits, detectives, you name it. In fact, it’s rare that someone from outside the academy would step foot inside the compound, though it is open to the public daily from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. (closed weekends).

To access the coffee shop, head past the security station, up the exterior stairs, and straight on back to find the rocky facade of the diner on your right-hand side. Then all you have to do is settle in and enjoy, knowing full well there’s not likely to be any funny business here.

Helpful Happiness

18 Therapists Reveal Their Secret to Happiness

Happiness is a choice

"Happiness comes from making an active choice to be happy, rather than depending on external things to make you happy. And the more that we look for it as if it is a treasure we will find, the less we feed the happiness that is inside of us. While we often don't have control over situations in our life, we always have control over our response to them." -- Alyssa Yeo, LPC, CYT

"Happiness is a choice and does not need to be dictated by circumstance. There are laws of physics that dictate things, like what goes up must come down, but there are no laws that dictate happiness. Happiness is where I decide it is, regardless of the circumstances." -- Monte Drenner, LMHC, CAP

Happiness is a lifestyle that takes work

"About 50% of our overall happiness level is genetically determined. About 8-20% is determined by life circumstances. The rest of what determines happiness is purposeful activity. That is the good news." -- Julienne B. Derichs, LCPC
"Happiness isn't a secret; it's simply the byproduct of certain lifestyle choices. They include being part of a community of friends and family, being of service regularly, and promptly repairing the mistakes we make along the way." -- Kansas Cafferty, MA, LMFT, MCA, CATC, NCAAC
"It's no secret, as far as I'm concerned. It's that people don't want to do the work to get it." -- Leah Benson, LMHC

Another Sad Sign Of The Times

Victory Motorcycles Is Shutting Down

Victory Motorcycles, an Iowa-based American motorcycle company best known for making classic cruiser-style bikes, is ceasing production immediately. It had an 18-year run under corporate overlord Polaris.

Polaris, which owns Victory as well as the Indian and Slingshot motorcycle/powersport brands (and RZR and 4Wheel Parts stores), announced today in a press release that “Victory has struggled to establish the market share needed to succeed and be profitable.”

Which sounds a lot like “we tried, but it was easier to buy Indian than do our own thing.” I wonder if there were also issues with Victory and Indian hurting each other by coexisting and competing.

Polaris stated it plans to continue cultivating the Indian motorcycles line, which it acquired in 2011, and those weird Slingshot two-seat tricycles it started selling in 2015.

Marchionne says the Chrysler 200 and Dodge Dart were terrible investments for FCA

FCA chief expects crossover and SUV sales to remain strong.

"I can tell you right now that both the Chrysler 200 and the Dodge Dart, as great products as they were, were the least financially rewarding enterprises that we've carried out inside FCA in the last eight years," Marchionne said. "I don't know one investment that was as bad as these two were."

Marchionne was responding to a question about whether he felt the company's shift toward trucks and SUVs and sacrifice in sedan development was shortsighted. Marchionne said he felt that the market would likely continue to be strong for trucks and SUVs, and that the sedan market requires enormous investment that might not pay off. He used the 200 and Dart as examples.

Why Pay For This Site When A Car Forum Is Free?

Help crowdfund Motoroso, an automotive enthusiast project site

Our friends at Motoroso have launched a Wefunder crowdfunding campaign ahead of NAIAS, and we wanted to tell you a bit about it. You see, Motoroso is a site that lets car enthusiasts browse through other people's car projects and modifications, find and save ideas they like, and share their own project details. But on top of that, the parts of a particular project can be tagged. So if you see some wheels you really like, you can find a place that will sell them to you. It's basically what a lot of car folks do already, with build threads in forums, but the ease of use to find something you like makes Motoroso a bit different. If that sounds a bit like Pinterest, it is, but there's rarely much info about the mods you're looking at if you stumble across a random Pinterest image someone shared.
