Damn, That's An Aggressive Business Tactic

When Crystal Pepsi was released, Coca-Cola released a competitor called Tab Clear, however Tab Clear was intentionally marketed poorly in order to hurt Crystal Pepsi’s image by product association. The “born to die” strategy was successful and both campaigns were dead 6 months later.

According to Coca-Cola’s chief marketing officer, Sergio Zyman, Tab Clear was an intentionally “suicidal kamikaze” effort to create an unpopular beverage that was positioned as an analogue of Crystal Pepsi in order to “kill both in the process”. The “born to die” strategy included using the poor-performing Tab brand rather than Coke, labeling the product as a “sugar free” diet drink to confuse consumers into thinking Crystal Pepsi had no sugar, and marketing the product as if it were “medicinal”. Zyman said “Pepsi spent an enormous amount of money on the brand and, regardless, we killed it. Both of them were dead within six months.”

Nice Try, Better Luck Next Time

This Soda’s Flat

In January, Philadelphia became the first major American city to institute a sugary drinks tax of 1.5 cents per ounce. That amount might seem insignificant, but it resulted in a dollar price hike for some 2-liter bottles.

[E]ight months in, we’ve got our hands on some data.

So has the tax accomplished its goals?

Well, if the main purpose was to generate revenue for city programs like pre-K and libraries, then no. Philly came up about 15% short of its target.

Ok, that must mean Philadelphians must be drinking fewer sugary drinks, right? Not necessarily—they might just be buying soda elsewhere. Although carbonated soft drink sales decreased by 55% in Philly grocery stores, they rose by 38% just outside the city’s borders.

I Want To Try This Caffiene Jolt

Espresso Cola: Give Your Soda the Coffee Treatment It Deserves

First, start with the Coca-Cola. Haft and Suarez prefer Mexican Coca-Cola because it's made with real sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup. All you need next is to top it off with your espresso—or a makeshift version. Compass uses 17 grams of coffee in the basket to 34 grams of pulled espresso—a one-to-two ratio. To get the big coffee taste with delightful and refreshing fizz, make sure to do it in that order: Pour the soda first, then top it off with the coffee.

But be warned that the caffeine boost is no joke. Not that we mind. Espresso Cola is so good that we're willing to sacrifice some sleep to drink it more often. Except, when we have it after-hours, we're thinking we'll spike it with a little bit of Fernet-Branca or rum.
