That's Not A Bad Idea
Got somewhere you need to go? Go there in an M5.
Editor's note: My preference would be in an E39 M5.

The E39 Is My Favorite 5 Series Chassis
Let's revisit the top BMW 5-Series models ever!
1999 E39 BMW M5

1999 E39 BMW M5
Meet the car that actually sparked the so-called German saloon
horsepower war – the E39 BMW M5. Its M5 predecessor was also developing
around 305 bhp, and BMW actually managed to increase this output level
to 400 bhp, courtesy of a 4.9-liter V8 engine.
This engine also delivered 395 pound-feet of max torque. With this amount of power, the E39 BMW M5 could sprint from zero to 60 mph in just 4.8 seconds, and achieve a top speed of 186 mph (with the electronic speed limiter unhooked).
It even managed to record a lap time of 8:20 lap time at the famed the famed Nurburgring. Throughout its lifetime (1999-2003), BMW produced 20,482 examples.

I Wouldn't Mind Either Of These
Here Are Ten Of The Best Sleepers You Can Buy For Less Than $5000
2. 1999 BMW 540i
This BMW 540i looks just like a base model, two-decade-old 5 series, but it packs a punch more resembling a fire-breathing muscle car than anything else. I’ll let Ricardo Landgrave explain:
This Subaru Legacy is what happens when the STi grows up and gets a real job. I’ll let TheUkrainian1 explain:

With a short shifter, new diff, M60 manifold and performance tyres, it should give many cars a run for their money.8. 2006 Subaru Legacy GT
It’s also a BMW, so people will assume it’s broken down. Best sleeper ever.
With those non M Tech bumpers, pre LCI look and normal wheels, nobody expects a V8, just remove the badge.
Expect high maintenance costs. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
This Subaru Legacy is what happens when the STi grows up and gets a real job. I’ll let TheUkrainian1 explain:
mid 2000's Subaru Legacy GT. I prefer the wagon flavor (mainly because I have one). They can be found for under 5K, and a good amount of STI parts can be used on them so the aftermarket is quite large. Tons of room, AWD, a turbo, heated leather seats, etc.Complete list (Jalopnik.com)

This Has Got To Be Too Good To Be True
Now's Your Chance To Buy A Brand New BMW E39 M5
This immaculate BMW E39 M5 has just come up for sale with fewer miles on its odometer than you'd walk in just two months! This is possibly the cleanest E39 in the world right now!
As the headline of this piece suggests, the M5 in question is factory fresh, and anyone with a Fitbit will have worked out the rough mileage - 10,000 steps per day (that’s recommended) is equal to around 300 miles of walking in just two months. That’s right, this M5 has only 309 genuine miles on the clock, which will mean that the tyres have barely turned and that the interior probably hasn’t been coughed, sneezed or eaten in . . . . .
According to the description by seller Enthusiast Auto Group, the M5 is fully optioned with Park Distance Control, M-Audio with Enhanced Bass, Power Rear Sunshade with Door Blinds, DVD, Sat-Nav and everything else you’d expect from a car with a £70,000 / $100,000 sticker price when new.

The greatest BMWs of the last 100 years - AutoBlog.com
E30 BMW 3 Series – David Gluckman
No, we can't and won't overlook the E30 M3. It's all kinds of greatness in a tidy package, with an engine that has to be worked, tons of tricks and tweaks that let it utterly dominate as a touring car, and a purpose for everything that went into the homologated road cars. It's what M once was and should strive to be once again.
But I have a special place for the more simple E30s, the ones that are still attainable. My 325i was a little rough around the edges, but it had held up pretty well and the engine was still going strong deep into triple-digit mileage. You feel like you're wearing an old pair of worn-in jeans when you're driving one – it's familiar, imperfect in ways you have known about for years, yours. They have acres of glass and you can actually see out of them in every direction (novel!). And then there's the way the car talks back; not so much through the wheel, because the steering isn't great, but you know what's going on around you at all times and why. Aside from the oddly placed wheel, the controls feel right and are placed deliberately. They're just plain friendly, and there's a reason the 3 Series, and this one in particular, was the benchmark for so long. Why did I sell mine again?
E39 BMW M5 – Mike Austin
This makes the case for the best sedan ever made. The E39 hits the sweet spot in so many ways. Take the glorious M5. In 1998, 400 horsepower was crazy, especially in a car that weighed just over 4,000 pounds. Unburdened by with the weight and equipment needed to cope with modern safety standards, the 5 Series was the benchmark of a balanced, responsive chassis. This was close to peak BMW - when the engines were still naturally aspirated and spun like sewing machines. Nothing in the class could touch the 5 Series in terms of driving involvement, and few cars since come close.

The E39 Is Great Car For These 2 Reasons
5 reasons why the BMW M5 (E39) is better than the Audi RS6 (C5)
1. It only comes with a manual gearbox
The good old manual vs. auto debate… Of course it isn’t really a debate, what is though is whether or not it’s ok to have an automatic if your car can come with a manual… (or at least should be - let me know in the comments what you think) This doesn’t make the Prius ok though. Wretched… “thing” - keeping it young teenager friendly.
With its manual - hhhhhhhgngnnnnn - transmission, the E39 M5 is already a different car to drive than the RS6. It’s more engaging and involving. And while it might be a slight pain when you’re stuck in traffic or pull away on an incline, it rewards you every single time you nail a downshift and praise the gods of rev-matching when you blip the throttle. This is a car that makes you wonder why MCM can’t mean “manual crush monday”, as opposed to “man crush monday”, a topic solely discussed by 16 year old basic bi…es while casually sipping on a pumpkin spice latte and hating on Becky’s top because “OMG, O M G. Did you see that top?! It’s like so ewwww, so gross! Like get away from me. OMG”
3. It has aged better
The E39 generation of BMW’s 5 series is widely regarded as the most successful; design wise, of it’s kind. The lines are simple, but desperately pretty, they give the car a real presence and a sophisticated look. None of the lines are actually that beautiful if you look at them on their own, but as an ensemble, even BMW themselves is struggling to do better.
The rear 3/4 view, like with many BMWs, is especially successful in stirring your loins as you walk up to it; butterflies in the stomach and all. I personally find that in a dark navy blue or a light silver (like in the picture above) the car looks even better. The RS6 looks more dated, although I’d argue the 2nd generation of crazy estates from Ingolstadt look even more obsolete. The M5 looks purposeful, you know that it’s a bit more sporty, but not so much that it looks vulgar, or brash - “brash“ and “vulgar” are the words I’d use to describe the E60 M5.
