You Sometimes Need To Reset & Restructure To Recapture
VW Group plan puts Porsche in charge of a 'super-premium' division
It will coordinate efforts at Audi, Bentley, Bugatti and Lamborghini
An Automobile report looks into what's happening on the organizational and technical sides of the Volkswagen Group, and what those changes could mean for the premium brands. The wide-angle view is that Porsche appears to have been anointed to "coordinate the future activities" at Audi, Bentley, Bugatti and Lamborghini. Audi would cede Lamborghini guardianship to Stuttgart, and Ducati — via a new concern called Ducati Enterprises — would become the shepherd for VW's other Italian investments. Executives target Jan. 1, 2019, to complete the reshuffle.
VW wants to save a boodle by tying up four of its five top-tier brands, and putting the one with the highest ROI in charge. Porsche, within its own house, wants to reduce expenditures by $2.3 billion per year over for four years, the savings already earmarked for improving internal processes like R&D and production. Having Porsche share those gains as well as lead development of platforms, components and future-tech strategies for the sister sports car brands could benefit everyone.

Why Does VW Canada Get All The Good Paint Colors?
Volkswagen Is Doing Color Right For A Change
[C]an’t complain about what Volkswagen is doing for the Golf R, because, color-wise, they are bringing it. Well, in Canada at least.
Just look at all the glorious color options you get when you’re specc’ing out a Golf R in Canada:
[T]ry to spec a car on the U.S. site, I get this:
Five colors? Wait, I mean two colors, and three neutrals. Why do the Canadians get all those colors and not us? Let’s check the UK:
Hm, better, we have nine colors, but still nothing close to Canada! What’s going on here? Who decides this stuff?

Desperate Fans Go To Desperate Measures
Woman gets a Volkswagen GTI in exchange for Szechuan sauce
Rachel Marie was lucky enough to get ahold of a packet of Szechuan sauce. According to The Drive, Marie intended to trade it online for a set of pins. Instead, she was offered a MkIV GTI. It's a good one, too, with a five-speed manual and Volkswagen's 20-valve 1.8-liter turbocharged inline-four. This writer was very close to buying a similar car a decade ago.
It's not clear what state the car is in, but the trade seems to be worth it (unless it needs a new timing belt). Still, congrats to Rachel for cashing out before McDonald's brings the sauce back in full force sometime next month, tanking the Szechuan sauce market by flooding it with new currency.

An End Of An Automotive Era
Volkswagen ends production of the Scirocco 43 years after it began
It's a sad and lonely end for the front-wheel-drive hatchback coupe.
Volkswagen, still reeling from the Dieselgate scandal and refocusing its plans on electrifying its vehicle lineup, has officially pulled the plug on the Scirocco nameplate after more than 40 years. The company's German consumer website says (according to Google Translate) that "The Scirocco can no longer be ordered with individual equipment. However, finished, already produced vehicles are available for you."
Even though it's been many years since you could buy a 'Roc in the states, it's a sad and lonely end for the front-wheel-drive hatchback coupe.

They See Me Rollin' - VW GTI Edition
Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk. 1
Over at the Volkswagen stand, next to the new VW Up! GTI, was a beautiful example of the original Golf GTI, arguably the original hot hatch. Of course, since this was in Germany, the car is a European-spec model with round headlights. And yes, this had those awesome plaid seats. Research the Volkswagen GTI

The 'R' Branding Is About To Jump The Shark
Volkswagen To Ramp Up More R Models Hoping To Gain An AMG Like Following
Unlike Mercedes-AMG, Volkswagen’s R performance division isn’t much of a sub-brand.
While the VW Golf R remains the industry’s quintessential hot
hatch, there’s no shortage of rivals ready and willing to usurp its
position as a segment leader. Also, one model does not a sub-brand
make.
Down the road from VW’s Wolfsburg, Germany, headquarters, the executives in Stuttgart can’t AMG-ify Mercedes-Benz products fast enough. SUVs, “coupe” variants of SUVs, sedans, and legit coupes are all going under the knife, emerging with taut suspension, improved driving dynamics, and an all-important shot of horsepower — traditionally in “strong” and “extra strong” doses. Not only does it improve an automaker’s image, it also helps sell high-profit utility vehicles.
Volkswagen requires some of Mercedes-AMG’s medicine. Now, according to a recent report, it may have the cure it’s looking for.

Nostalgia Sells Very Well
Here's What A Maximum '90s Nostalgia Volkswagen GTI Is Worth Now
A 1992 Volkswagen GTI was fun and “fast” around the time a lot of us got our driver’s licenses. But it was nothing special, which meant a lot of them were cheap, which meant you or somebody you knew probably had one. And that is why this modest little car is stirring up so much nostalgia.
The VW Golf GTI of the early ‘90s wasn’t the first hot hatch. It wasn’t even the first GTI. But it was nimble, it was simple, it was a riot to drive and it was within reach even if you were a car fan of modest means.
Turns out I’m not the only one who has a soft spot for these, because the prettiest GTI I’ve seen since high school just sold for $12,000. That’s not too far off what the car’s MSRP would have been 25 years ago!
