That's Not A Bad Idea
Got somewhere you need to go? Go there in an M5.
Editor's note: My preference would be in an E39 M5.

Will The Motor & Drivetrain Fit In An E36 Sedan?
The New 2018 BMW M5 Will Be A 600 Horsepower AWD Monster With A Twin-Turbo V8
We’ve seen rough renderings of the 2018 BMW M5, we’ve heard it out on the Nürburgring, and now BMW has finally confirmed that the new generation is powered by a 600 horsepower version of its twin-turbo V8, powered through mostly the rear wheels.
The 4.4 liter twin-turbo engine is essentially the same as the outgoing model, but the tweaks are mostly good news, with power output at around 600 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. Unfortunately, we’re now entering an age where the M5 will only be available with a traditional and good 8-speed automatic transmission. BMW claims 0-60 mph in just 3.5 seconds, via Car And Driver.
The next M5 might say it’s AWD on the label, but BMW hasn’t strayed away from its RWD roots completely. The system will be adaptive, with the car in “2WD mode” most of the time, and AWD kicking in only when things get too crazy. As we’ve reported before, you can still do burnouts with the toggle of a button.

The E39 Is My Favorite 5 Series Chassis
Let's revisit the top BMW 5-Series models ever!
1999 E39 BMW M5
Complete list (4WheelNews.com)
1999 E39 BMW M5
Meet the car that actually sparked the so-called German saloon
horsepower war – the E39 BMW M5. Its M5 predecessor was also developing
around 305 bhp, and BMW actually managed to increase this output level
to 400 bhp, courtesy of a 4.9-liter V8 engine.
This engine also delivered 395 pound-feet of max torque. With this amount of power, the E39 BMW M5 could sprint from zero to 60 mph in just 4.8 seconds, and achieve a top speed of 186 mph (with the electronic speed limiter unhooked).
It even managed to record a lap time of 8:20 lap time at the famed the famed Nurburgring. Throughout its lifetime (1999-2003), BMW produced 20,482 examples.

I'd Take This Over the M4 GTS
BMW's New M5 Is Ultra-Exclusive And Packs An Insane 600 Horsepower
The
20” forged wheels are the first of the upgrades on the package. The car
is also lowered 0.4 inches and rests on stiffer dampers. Track prowess
is exacerbated by an active M differential that’s been updated to ensure
proper traction given the power upgrade. Even the M Dynamic mode gets a
software update to make the Dynamic Stability Control system play nice
with the special edition model, but carbon ceramic brakes come standard
in case the extra power proves to be too much.
Only 50 will be made so even if you had the money it'd be tough to get one.
Those
who were itching to write a check for an exclusive $130,000 BMW were
left disappointed when it was announced that all 700 units of the magical water-injected
M4 GTS were sold out. Thankfully BMW still wants fans to write it
checks, so it put its M Division engineers back to work to cook up the
hottest “high performance business sedan” to appease wealthy buyers who
enjoy bragging about their cars over cigars. Dubbed the Pure Metal
Silver Limited Edition, the car is based on the M5 sedan.
In
this special guise, the 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 gets a 40
horsepower and 16 lb-ft of torque boost over its standard sibling to
yield 600 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. This unit sits in front of
a seven-speed M transmission with two clutches enabling the transfer of
kinetic energy. BMW estimates that the power boost will get the lardy
sedan from 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds, 0.1 seconds quicker than the
everyman M5. If the driver doesn’t relent, this M5 will keep on
rampaging up to 190 mph, an increase of 35 mph over the normal M5’s top
speed thanks to the M Driver’s Package that comes standard on this
special edition. Also included in the price premium is an enhanced
version of the M Competition package for track days.

This Has Got To Be Too Good To Be True
Now's Your Chance To Buy A Brand New BMW E39 M5
This immaculate BMW E39 M5 has just come up for sale with fewer miles on its odometer than you'd walk in just two months! This is possibly the cleanest E39 in the world right now!
As the headline of this piece suggests, the M5 in question is factory fresh, and anyone with a Fitbit will have worked out the rough mileage - 10,000 steps per day (that’s recommended) is equal to around 300 miles of walking in just two months. That’s right, this M5 has only 309 genuine miles on the clock, which will mean that the tyres have barely turned and that the interior probably hasn’t been coughed, sneezed or eaten in . . . . .
According to the description by seller Enthusiast Auto Group, the M5 is fully optioned with Park Distance Control, M-Audio with Enhanced Bass, Power Rear Sunshade with Door Blinds, DVD, Sat-Nav and everything else you’d expect from a car with a £70,000 / $100,000 sticker price when new.

The greatest BMWs of the last 100 years - AutoBlog.com
E30 BMW 3 Series – David Gluckman
No, we can't and won't overlook the E30 M3. It's all kinds of greatness in a tidy package, with an engine that has to be worked, tons of tricks and tweaks that let it utterly dominate as a touring car, and a purpose for everything that went into the homologated road cars. It's what M once was and should strive to be once again.
But I have a special place for the more simple E30s, the ones that are still attainable. My 325i was a little rough around the edges, but it had held up pretty well and the engine was still going strong deep into triple-digit mileage. You feel like you're wearing an old pair of worn-in jeans when you're driving one – it's familiar, imperfect in ways you have known about for years, yours. They have acres of glass and you can actually see out of them in every direction (novel!). And then there's the way the car talks back; not so much through the wheel, because the steering isn't great, but you know what's going on around you at all times and why. Aside from the oddly placed wheel, the controls feel right and are placed deliberately. They're just plain friendly, and there's a reason the 3 Series, and this one in particular, was the benchmark for so long. Why did I sell mine again?
E39 BMW M5 – Mike Austin
This makes the case for the best sedan ever made. The E39 hits the sweet spot in so many ways. Take the glorious M5. In 1998, 400 horsepower was crazy, especially in a car that weighed just over 4,000 pounds. Unburdened by with the weight and equipment needed to cope with modern safety standards, the 5 Series was the benchmark of a balanced, responsive chassis. This was close to peak BMW - when the engines were still naturally aspirated and spun like sewing machines. Nothing in the class could touch the 5 Series in terms of driving involvement, and few cars since come close.
