I'm Glad That It's Going To Be A Sequel & Not A Remake

'Top Gun' Sequel to Put Maverick in the Pilot's Seat Again

If you’re feeling the need for some speed, then you’re in luck: During the Berlin press day for Terminator Genisys last week, Skydance Productions’ David Ellison and Dana Goldberg provided some intel on the status of the sequel to the 1986 fighter-ace blockbuster Top Gun. Among the tidbits: That Top Gun 2 would take place in modern day; that it would involve Maverick, the hotshot, hot-dogging Navy pilot character that helped make Tom Cruise one of the biggest stars in the world; and that it would revolve around the increased use of unmanned drones in military aviation.

“Justin Marks is writing the screenplay right now,” said Ellison (via Collider). “He has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy have turned into today. There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie and there is no Top Gun without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick.”

Surprised, I Think Not

WWE's Big Show finally admits Brock Lesnar ring breaking spot was rigged

On the June 12, 2003, episode's of WWE's Smackdown, Brock Lesnar took on The Big Show in a match that would quickly go down in WWE history as it ended with Lesnar landing a top rope Superplex on his 500-pound opponent, with their combined weight causing the ring to break.

Both wrestlers and the WWE have long maintained that the iconic spot was not pre-rigged and that the two goliaths really caused the ring to collapse with their high-flying antics.

A dozen years after the fact, Big Show is finally letting up on the ruse in an appearance on fellow wrestler Chris Jericho's Talk is Jericho podcast.

The seven-foot former champion finally admitted the whole thing was rigged: “I’ve kayfabed this whole thing for years and told everybody, ‘Oh the ring broke,’ and 'It was really crazy timing.'"

He then goes on to explain how it happened: "We did a spot right before we broke the ring where we’re both down and they shoot a real close-up of both of us selling. Well in that time, [WWE Stunt Coordinator] Ellis [Edwards] had airbags under the ring. So they had lifted the ring a couple inches. So now, when I’m standing on that top corner, that ring is like standing on marbles. Because it’s moving. Of course now I’ve got my fat ass up in the air, 500 pounds on a not very stable surface … So then the ring broke. I just remember when it happened because … you don’t know how the stunt is going to look. But man, it was so perfectly timed the way we did it and Ellis did a great job of setting up. That thing collapsed and everybody they bought it so long.

Afterwards, he admitted to lying about the move for years: "And this is the first time out all the interviews I’ve ever done, I’ve admitted the truth that that was a rigged angle. On hundreds of interviews, I have lied right through my teeth and said it's a shoot. But if you get a chance to suspend people's reality just for an instant, for a second, it's good for them"

2015 NHL Draft Recap

Some should be happy, some should have regrets

Feeling Good About Themselves

Anaheim Ducks
  • General Manager of the Year finalist Bob Murray wasn't resting on his laurels during the second day of the draft, as he acquired goaltender Anton Khudobin from the Hurricanes for defenseman James Wisniewski (thus freeing up crucial cap space with Wisniewski's salary off the books) and then nabbed restricted free agent Carl Hagelin and the 59th and 179th picks for Emerson Etem and the 41st pick. The moves reinforce the notion that the Ducks believe they are close to championship form. Although Etem had local appeal as a California native and had good size and great speed, head coach Bruce Boudreau lacked full confidence in his abilities, as witnessed by the fact Etem was in and out of the lineup during the Ducks' run to Game 7 of the Western Conference finals. As for Khudobin, he has shown enough stretches of stellar play in the last couple of years, playing behind a poor Hurricanes team to suggest he's got the tools to become a solid starter. It's believed the move will pave the way for top goaltending prospect John Gibson to play another season in the American Hockey League while providing support and perhaps competition for starter Frederik Andersen, who seemed to hit a wall late in the Ducks' playoff run.

This Is A Damn Good Read

Getting inside the Top Gear production process

The best way to get an idea of just how big of a task each episode of Top Gear was is to read this story by Sniff Petrol and TG script editor Richard Porter. It essentially breaks down how ideas were formulated for each new segment, and then explains how they were built. The almost day-by-day breakdown reveals a number of fascinating things about the show.

The most obvious tidbit gleaned is the reinforcement of the idea that Jeremy Clarkson is a passionate, meticulous workaholic, a trait that only recently bubbled up following the host's firing. In his writing about the TG process, Porter calls Clarkson the "chief scrutineer," who after a day of brainstorming and script writing would often show up to work the next day with "a dozen new script tweaks, suggestions and jokes" after having "lain awake all night worrying over tiny details and agonizing over the smallest point until he'd got it right."

Good Idea, But I Think The Target Market Is Incorrect

It's time for Corvette to attack Porsche

For most of its existence, Porsche was a smug little sports car company with a fairly limited lineup and small but steady sales. Any time the company strayed from its air-cooled, rear engine formula, the purists would turn their noses. The 944? The 948? "Not a proper Porsche," they'd sniff. And then came the greatest sin of them all: the Cayenne. To the purists, this was treason. Porsche making an SUV? Horrors!

Of course, you all know how it turned out. Porsche grew to be a profit-generating juggernaut within the Volkswagen Group. And since one SUV wasn't enough they added another, the Macan. By the end of the decade Porsche will have quadrupled its global sales. You have to wonder what else it has up its sleeve.

Couldn't this be a lesson for General Motors? It has a terrific sports car brand in Corvette. In fact, it's arguably the most iconic brand within GM's full-line portfolio. But for its entire existence that brand has been locked up within Chevrolet.

Maybe it's time for GM to unlock that brand and treat Corvette as a stand-alone company. A Corvette SUV could be a killer first step. Since Porsche only makes two SUVs, maybe Corvette could make three. Small, medium, and large. And just as Porsche has the Panamera, an executive sedan from team Corvette could become an instant "gotta-have" for the yacht-buying jet set.

France family poised to take over Laguna Seca operations

Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca could be in for a big change. The Sports Car Racing Association of the Monterey Peninsula, a non-profit that's managed the iconic race track since it was built back in 1957, may be out, as officials from Monterey County, CA announced they're in negotiations with International Speedway Corporation, the company owned by NASCAR's France family.

The county "has been exploring options for the management of the raceway to ensure its long-term success," Asphalt and Rubber reports. According to the website, the track has struggled with attendance at big-name events, and lost its MotoGP race after the 2013 season. Selling Laguna Seca is not as simple as keys and cash changing hands, though.

The track currently sits in a public park that's owned by the county, and any sale would be subject to an open session where the general public could weigh in, and that's not exactly a good thing, A/R reports. According to the website, despite the car-crazy atmosphere that the city of Monterey plays host to during its eponymous Car Week, many citizens of the seaside town aren't too fond of the track.

Queen may have to move for Buckingham Palace repairs

London (AFP) - Queen Elizabeth II may have to move out of Buckingham Palace to allow for much-needed repairs including taking out asbestos, replacing ageing boilers and rewiring, royal officials said on Wednesday.

"One option is for the palace to be vacated," a royal source said, giving one estimate for the refurbishment of the 18th-century building at £150 million (211 million euros, $237 million).

"We're getting experts to look at these scenarios," the source said, adding that the royal family's continued presence would depend on whether the building work was done in stages or all at once.

The 10 Hot Dog Commandments With Doug Sohn

3. Thy wiener shall be made of meat
  • For carnivores, beef, pork, veal, or some combination thereof are preferred. As with all meats, the source is important. Your local butcher is usually going to be your best bet and there are certainly acceptable brands in your supermarket. In Chicago, just use Vienna Beef. They're the best.
7. The ends of thy hot dog can hang past the ends of thy bun, but not the other way around
  • And thy bun shall be fresh. Steamed or toasted is preferred. Some people like the side cut, others the top cut. I guess this is a regional thing. Buns must be sturdy enough to hold the wiener and toppings without falling apart.
9. Thou shall treat the hot dog as thou would treat the finest fish, fowl, or expensive food item
  • Love, care, and attention to detail shall not be ignored. Having said that, hot dogs are very forgiving and will last a pretty long time in a steam tray or the indirect heat part of the grill.

Car Guy Politician And Californians Make Retro License Plates Happen

In 2012, California Assemblyman Mike Gatto introduced and passed a bill to bring back three vintage license plate designs if they could just collect 7,500 orders for each. The yellow-on-black style, originally issued from 1963 to ’69, made the cut and will start shipping this month.

“Aside from not salting our roads, California doesn’t often do much for automobile enthusiasts,” Gatto said in a press release, probably unintentionally giving us his best attempt at understatement. “This is an easy way for the state to enable everyone from the backyard restorer, to the nostalgic, to the purchaser of a retro-styled automobile to add that extra bit of detail for those of us who appreciate the classic era of automobile design.”

Did You Know - City Buses Edition

Why do buses show up in threes?

Have you ever been waiting at a bus stop for what felt like an eternity, only for two or three buses to show up at the same time? After such a long wait, it can be infuriating to see the second one practically empty. This phenomenon is actually quite well-known in the world of traffic theory, and an interesting article from City Metric gets to the bottom of the causes and some possible solutions.

The key to getting busses to spread back out during the day comes down to the difficult duty of managing chaos. Since the drivers are on a closed loop, it only takes a short delay for another vehicle on the same route to close the gap. From there, more people are left waiting at stops, which causes things to move even slower. The situation just keeps getting worse until you see a procession of public transportation coming down the road.

Using a simple game that you can try, the City Metric piece goes into detail about many of the factors that cause these frustrating delays. While it's possible to improve the situation, completely fixing the problem is largely impossible due to the way our roads work. Give the whole article a read to better understand why. The explanation unfortunately doesn't make waiting for a bus any easier.

I Was Wondering What Their Prerequisite's Were

What do J.D. Power's quality ratings really measure?

First, as its name indicates, it's all about "initial" quality, measured by problems reported by new-vehicle owners in their first 90 days of ownership. If something breaks or falls off four months in, it doesn't count here. Second, the scores are problems per 100 vehicles, or PP100. So Power's 2015 IQS industry average of 112 PP100 translates to just 1.12 reported problems per vehicle. Third, no attempt is made to differentiate BIG problems from minor ones. Thus a transmission or engine failure counts the same as a squeaky glove box door, tricky phone pairing, inconsistent voice recognition, or anything else that annoys the owner.

Traditionally, a high-quality vehicle is one that is well-bolted together. It doesn't leak, squeak, rattle, shed parts, show gaps between panels, or break down and leave you stranded. By this standard, there are very few poor-quality new vehicles in today's U.S. market.

But what "quality" should not mean, is subjective likeability: ease of operation of the radio, climate controls, or seat adjusters, phone pairing, music downloading, sizes of touch pads on an infotainment screen, quickness of system response, or accuracy of voice-recognition. These are ergonomic "human factors" issues, not "quality" problems.

Yet these kinds of pleasability issues are now dominating today's JDP "quality" ratings. "Cars and trucks have never been built better, but frustration with audio, infotainment, and navigation features on new vehicles has never been worse," Automotive News senior writer Jesse Snyder pointed out back in 2012. "For the first time, complaints about such features surpassed those about engines and transmissions as the top category... [And] half the problems reported by vehicle owners after 90 days were design related – things that are confusing or hard to use rather than faulty or broken."

As Power's 2015 IQS press release points out, "Entertainment and connectivity systems remain the most problem-prone area for a third consecutive year, with voice recognition and Bluetooth pairing continuing to top the problem list." But is that really quality? J.D. Power says that when it asks consumers what quality means to them, their definition is much broader than just absence of defects.

"They also include 'perceived' quality, quality of materials, and very much design quality – not only is the component built as designed, but was it designed right in the first place," a J.D. Power executive said. "The purpose of the IQS, they contend, is to measure quality problems as defined and reported by consumers. "So we take the broad approach that if a consumer considers something a problem, it is counted as a problem, and we count them all the same for a number of reasons. When we look at the degree to which these problems impact overall satisfaction of the customer, there is virtually no difference between design problems and defects."

Also important to understand is that almost all automakers have gotten so good that the rankings among brands and gaps between them are far less meaningful than they once were. For example, in the 2015 IQS, the gap between Chevrolet in seventh place and Toyota in 10th is just three PP100, or 0.03 problems per vehicle, which seems statistically insignificant.

Fox Sports Has A Lot To Improve On In Their Golf Coverage

How Fox Sports could improve its U.S. Open coverage, more Media Circus

Comments & criticisms (ESPN.com)

10 ways Fox Sports can improve its golf broadcasts

1. Holly Sonders was underutilized and in the wrong role as interviewer. Not a strength. She’d have been better in the role of moderator, as she did for Golf Channel, which leads us to…

2. Curt Menefee, an otherwise outstanding broadcaster and host of Fox NFL Sunday. But his limited knowledge of golf became apparent early in the week. Sonders would have been a better fit.

3. Less USGA worship. It’s not going to happen, of course, because the USGA is Fox’s “partner,” as they like to say. To its credit, though, Fox did not shy from reporting on course criticisms, which by extension were USGA criticisms.

5. Less talking, period. Do we need to be told that the second shot Jordan Spieth hit to the 18th green on Sunday was a great one, when we could see it for ourselves? Cutting to the set for roundtable discussions was overdone, too. Show the golf.

7. Lose the big screen television during interviews. We don’t need a picture in a picture, and it made for awkward exchanges between Sonders and her interview subjects.

10. Increase the use of its graphics showing the location of the hole and the distance to it. It’s hard for the viewer to ascertain where the pin is from cameras behind the golfers.

Even With Their Astronomical Maintanence Costs, People Still Buy These Cars

The True Cost of Owning A Bugatti Veyron

If you want to get an oil change and some standard service, which is typically the cheapest work you can get a garage to do, you’re looking at about $21,000 dollars. Yes, that’s just for an oil change and maybe a tire rotation. Since we are on the topic of tires, you’re also going to be paying a lot for your Veyron’s. The Bugatti Veyron uses very specific tires, and at top-speed, those tires only last about 15 minutes before needing to be replaced. Want a new set? Get ready to pay $42,000 dollars for new tires. Oh and the wheels also need to be replaced entirely after every other tire change. They will run you about $69,000 for a set. Bugatti also encourages that you replace the tires and wheels a few times throughout the year. So if you get an oil change, replace the tires, and then replace the wheels/tires for a Veyron in one year, you’re looking at $132,000 in just parts (excluding labor). Hopefully your transmission will never break on your Veyron, because it costs around $120,000 alone to replace. The Veyron also only gets about 15mpg on the highway, so you will be frequently visiting gas stations and obviously you have to use the most premium form of gasoline to fill it up. Based on data from FuelEconomy.gov, the average Veyron costs $83 dollars to fill up and the estimated annual fuel cost is around $4,700 dollars. Comparatively, a standard 2014 Honda Accord has an estimated annual fuel cost of just $1,450.

Jordan Spieth Wins U.S. Open, Halfway to Grand Slam

In the end, though, the 115th U.S. Open was decided by the same thing that determines every U.S. Open: nerves. And the best player won.

Amid a firestorm of criticism directed at the USGA, second-ranked Jordan Spieth, the class of 2015 coming into the week, shot 69 and watched Dustin Johnson three-putt the 18th green from just 12 and a half feet to give America’s boy wonder Spieth his second straight major title.

“Someone had to hold the trophy,” said Spieth, who admitted he was not at his best from tee to green, and who dedicated the victory to his father, Shawn, on Father’s Day. “There’s noise around every tournament about a pin position here or the greens are this or the layout. Someone has to win it.”

Players who had completed their junior seasons in college were eligible for the NWHL's first draft, which was held in Boston at Harvard University's Bright-Landry Hockey Center. Each of the 20 players selected Saturday can sign with the team that drafted her after completing her senior season, or she can opt for free agency and sign with one of the league's other three teams.

In addition to the Riveters, the NWHL's other teams are the Boston Pride, Buffalo Beauts and Connecticut Whale. The league's inaugural season is scheduled to begin in October. Free agency begins Aug. 17, when rosters will be finalized.

A Ferrari Or A Porsche Are Fair Substitutes

If You Want To Grow Your Business, You Need To Buy A Lamborghini
  1. The Lamborghini is an attention grabber. If you drive around in one of these cars, everyone you meet is going to want to know how you made enough money to afford that car. If you are operating in the right business model, this can be a powerful lead generation tool.
  2. From the moment you start driving around in this car, you will notice that anyone who sees a Lamborghini in person will immediately start fawning over this vehicle. Subconsciously, their opinion of you will be elevated.
  3. No matter where you are going or who you are meeting with, an attention grabbing car such as this will be a conversation starter.
  4. This car will help you generate new business. So much so, in hardly no time the car will start paying for itself.
  5. The trunk space is small. That may not seem like a huge benefit, but less trunk space, means less clutter piling up in your life and less groceries, so you can start eating less and eating better.
  6. The Lamborghini is a notorious gas guzzler and not very comfortable to drive. Chances are when you have the option of driving or walking, you will be making the healthier choice to walk a few extra feet.
  7. Parking this vehicle is tough. If you have a car this nice, chances are your worries about people keying it will increase. There is no better motivation to keep you in the right areas late at night than that.
  8. If you want attention on social media, all you need to do is share a picture of your car.
  9. A car like this can be great inspiration for your colleagues, customers and students. Let them know what they can achieve if they follow your lead.
  10. Being an entrepreneur is hard work, and it takes a lot of grinding and dedication. As a successful business owner, you deserve to treat yourself and have a little fun in your life as motivation to keep working, after all, you have earned it!

Happy 100th Anniversary To The Coca Cola Bottle

How the Coke bottle got its iconic shape

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the iconic Coca-Cola bottle, packaging that is just as recognizable as the logo or product itself.

In new book, "Design to Grow: How Coca-Cola Learned to Combine Scale and Agility (and How You Can Too)," Coca-Cola VP of innovation and entrepreneurship David Butler and co-author Linda Tischler designate the uniquely contoured bottle to be one of seven marketing strategies that allowed The Coca-Cola Company to scale into a global behemoth.

When the Georgia businessman Asa Griggs Candler became the majority shareholder of Coca-Cola in 1888, two years after its invention, he set his sights on making Coke the nation's most popular cola through marketing and partnerships with regional bottlers.

But by 1915, Candler was losing market share to hundreds of competitors. He launched a national contest for a new bottle design that would signal to consumers that Coke was a premium product that couldn't be confused with some other brown cola in an identical glass bottle.

The new bottle had to be able to be mass produced using existing equipment yet also be distinct.

The Root Glass Company in Indiana decided to enter the contest and base its design off the product's name. While combing through the dictionary for the word "coca" and words like it, Butler writes, mold shop supervisor Earl R. Dean came across an illustration for the cocoa plant that caught his attention.

Coca-Cola had nothing to do with cocoa, but the cocoa pod had a strange but appealing shape. He and his team got to work and were declared the contest winners the next year.

I Can't Wait To Go Visit This Place

SpeedVegas to offer supercar experiences near the Strip

Las Vegas is about nothing if not excitement, and now the city known as America's Playground is about to get a new supercar experience.

It's called SpeedVegas, and it's being built on South Las Vegas Boulevard, just 10 minutes from the iconic "Welcome to Las Vegas" sign. The complex is set to be built around a circuit "inspired by Formula One racetracks," on which customers will be able to sample a wide range of exotic supercars and muscle cars.

Rather than build up an existing or disused track, SpeedVegas spokesman Colin Daviau assured Autoblog that "it's a completely new track on a undeveloped parcel of land," featuring a 2,000-foot-long straight, 12 corners, and 60 feet of elevation change. Set to open in January 2016, the hundred-acre facility will also include a welcome center and event center capable of hosting all manner of functions.

The project is being undertaken by the same people behind World Class Driving, which has offered similar experiences on public roads around Lake Mead for the better part of a decade now.

Yes, It Has

Has MyVegas Hit Rock Bottom?

We’ve featured a lot of stories about MyVegas, some good and some bad. Even though the games are a great way to kill some time and rack of comps and rewards, there always seems to be a number of issues associated with it.

(VegasChatter.com)

Editor's note: The 3 rewards per visit, not day, PER VISIT is a horrible rule. If you are in town for 3 days and 2 nights, that limits you to 1 reward per day. On top of that, you have to be very selective about which reward you choose. As a consumer, wouldn't you like to have the freedom of 3 per day? I'm ok with limiting the use of a reward to the resort you are staying at, but allowing 3 reward claims per day would open up our wallets more at the resort. Or it use to, as I haven't visited Las Vegas in quite some time, and my Mlife tier level has dropped from Gold to Pearl, and will downgrading to Sapphire in October.

The Sport Compact Car Market Keeps Getting Smaller & Smaller

Nissan IDx definitely dead, but new Juke will be ‘innovative and exciting’

Nissan has ‘no plans to produce’ the sporty, retro IDx coupe, according to the company’s chief creative officer, Shiro Nakamura, speaking to evo at the Le Mans 24 Hours.

First presented at the 2013 Tokyo motor show, the IDx was unveiled in two forms – a high-performance Nismo version and a more relaxed, classically-styled IDx Freeflow concept.

Each was resolutely modern in its surfacing and details, but both had stylistic echoes of some of the firm’s most popular historic models, including the Datsun 510 and first-generation KPGC10 Nissan Skyline GT-R.

It took the form of a four-seat, rear-wheel drive, two-door coupe, powered by compact turbocharged engines and in concept form at least, equipped with a continuously variable transmission. Reception was mixed, but the prospect of a rival to Toyota’s GT86 and the Subaru BRZ was more than welcome.

Unfortunately, it appears that issues beyond just cost have put such a car on the backburner. In addition to the price point problems hinted at by Nissan’s Pierre Loing last year, Nakamura hints that the IDx’s unusual style doesn’t quite sit with the company’s design direction.

Guess Who's Near AARP Age & Still Got Hops

60-Year-Old Alvin Gentry Can Still Fly

If there are any Cavaliers fans out there hoping the Warriors show up to Game 6 a little tight, I have some bad news for you — they probably aren’t. At least that’s what I’m gathering from this Instagram clip posted by Jarron Collins, which shows Warriors assistant coach, Alvin Gentry, “skying” for a dunk during a practice session today:

I'm Kinda Shocked To Find Out That The A6 TDI Set The Record

Audi sets diesel records on road and track

Around the same time, another team set out from Maastricht in the Netherlands in an Audi A6 TDI Ultra and drove it for 28 hours straight, hitting 14 countries and logging 1,158.9 miles on a single tank of diesel. The achievement, certified by Guinness World Records, was completed in a showroom-stock vehicle, with automotive journalist Andrew Frankel and racing driver Rebecca Jackson splitting driving duties. They achieved an average of 75.9 miles per gallon – much better than the advertised rating of 67 mpg – as they cruised through from Holland to Hungary, passing along the way through Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Austria, Germany, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, and Serbia.

It's Clearly A Seller's Market Right Now

Slight Bump In The Classic Car Market NOBODY PANIC

I am not, in any way, shape, or form, a certified financial advisor, nor a wealth management planner. (Not in this country, anyway.) That being said, INVESTING PRO TIP: The classic car market is in the midst of an enormous bubble. Get out while you still can. Case (probably not) in point, the market just took its biggest dip in 14 months.

That market dip, it should be said, was rated by Hagerty, the classic car insurance company which does have a vested interest in the overall strength of the classic car market.
