The E39 Is My Favorite 5 Series Chassis

Let's revisit the top BMW 5-Series models ever!

1999 E39 BMW M5

Meet the car that actually sparked the so-called German saloon horsepower war – the E39 BMW M5. Its M5 predecessor was also developing around 305 bhp, and BMW actually managed to increase this output level to 400 bhp, courtesy of a 4.9-liter V8 engine.

This engine also delivered 395 pound-feet of max torque. With this amount of power, the E39 BMW M5 could sprint from zero to 60 mph in just 4.8 seconds, and achieve a top speed of 186 mph (with the electronic speed limiter unhooked).

It even managed to record a lap time of 8:20 lap time at the famed the famed Nurburgring. Throughout its lifetime (1999-2003), BMW produced 20,482 examples.

For The Discerning Car Owner

Top 5 of the Most Ridiculous Car Items on Sale

Porsche 918 Spyder Luggage Set

Most of us like to go on road trips. And of course, common sense will tell us that we always travel with a luggage. But how would you feel if you would own a luxury car, say a Porsche 918 Spyder and go on a road trip with a luggage in your trunk worth more than a thousand bucks?

Apparently, Porsche had a brilliant idea by offering 918 Spyder owners the chance to own a matching five-piece luggage set worth $19,700.

Made out of leather, Alcantara and carbon fiber, this five-piece luggage set has a right to its price. However, you can already buy a decent car for that price, why spend it on overpriced luggage? C’mon Porsche, you can do better.
Hublot Ferrari Watch

Last on our list is another one of Ferrari’s ridiculous promotional efforts: a $300,000 watch. An addition to Ferrari’s stock of backpacks, cologne, cufflinks, wallets and more is a $300,000 Hublot watch.

They tapped the Switch watchmaker to make a watch that costs more than an actual Ferrari supercar. How about we trade this watch for a house and lot? Does that sound more practical? I guess avid Ferrari fans are not the practical kind.

They See Me Rollin' - Lamborghini Edition

Lamborghini Centenario has finally been unleashed on the track

The Lamborghini Centenario is a limited edition masterpiece from one of the most celebrated automakers of all time. This supercar was mainly created to commemorate the 100th birthday of Lamborghini’s founder, Mr. Ferruccio Lamborghini, and was first introduced to the public at the Geneva Motor Show in March of this year.

Only forty units have been produced for this stunning Lambo, twenty of which are coupes and the other half, roadsters. All of which have already been sold out amounting to at least $1.9 million each. It’s sad news for everyone of us who will not get to drive these forty bad boys but on a lighter note, thanks to technology, we’ll at least have a glimpse of its potential.

2018 Mercedes-AMG E63 debuts in LA with 603 horsepower

Drift Mode, guys. The E63 has a Drift Mode.

The most powerful version yet of Mercedes-AMG's 4.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 sits under the E63S' hood, with 603 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque. Paired with a 4Matic all-wheel-drive system that promises totally variable front-to-rear torque – there's no mention of lateral torque vectoring – Mercedes' new super sedan is faster off the line than the 640-hp Cadillac CTS-V. The E63S is 0.4 seconds faster to 60, doing the deed in just 3.3 seconds to the Caddy's 3.7 seconds (though the CTS-V's 200-mile-per-hour top speed dwarfs the E63S' 186-mph electronic limit). And if you buy the standard car? Don't worry, the base E63 can still beat the Cadillac with its 563 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. The run to 60 takes just 3.4 seconds, although it hits its electronic limit at only 155. Regardless of model, Mercedes stuck with its nine-speed AMG Speedshift multi-clutch transmission.

Beyond leaving claw marks in the pavement, the new 4Matic system has another trump card that we heard rumors about recently – Drift Mode. Standard on the E63S, drivers select the "Race" drive program, switch off stability control, activate the transmission's manual mode, and voila, big, smokey slides. Besides knowing how to activate it, details on going sideways are scarce. Mercedes claims Drift Mode turns the E63 into a "purely rear-wheel drive" vehicle, which sounds great, but we're wondering if this is entirely a function of the 4Matic system, or if there is some other trickery at play. No matter how AMG pulls it off, this sounds like a good deal – you have the all-wheel drive to maximize grip in a straight line, while a push of the button will allow the same kind of tail-out antics rear-drive owners experience whether they want it or not.

Mercedes will debut both the E63 and E63S at next month's Los Angeles Auto Show, with US sales to begin next summer.

Chinese Buyers Ding "New Car" Smell As Defect In JD Power Quality Study

It turns out the sweet, leathery smell that American consumers crave in their new cars is provoking winces among China’s emerging motoring class.

Unpleasant interior odors topped the list of complaints by Chinese car buyers for a second straight year in J.D. Power’s China Initial Quality Study, a problem that ranks as the No. 21 grievance among Americans. Chinese consumers griped about bad smell 16 times per 100 vehicles, while buggy voice-recognition systems drew the most complaints among U.S. motorists.

A Good Q & A Session With KW Suspensions

KW Answers Your Questions

Ben: Why do you only offer ride height adjustment through the adjustment of the spring perch instead of allowing a separate adjustment of the whole body like competitors such as Tein? Rather than having a predetermined minimum drop as designated by the shorter shock body, you could provide a longer body which would offer more stroke/travel and then tune the ride height separately while corner balancing. Is there an advantage to your method versus the competition?

MG: Regarding the height adjustment via the bottom bracket and threaded tube, there are two main reasons why KW suspension is designed this way. Using an adjustable unit might cause TÃœV problems as you can lower the car without adjusting the spring seat. A more important fact though, is that in general the bracket is metal or alloy, along with the threaded tube. That many not be a big problem in sunny California, but in Europe this combination will rust solid after the first winter thanks to salt, dirt and corrosion.

N Wyatt: In what ways will my suspension be ruined by lowering my car without modifying the control arms?

MG: The amount of lowering of any KW street suspension is analyzed and limited so you won’t run into any issues, like having to modifying control arms etc. Due to the fact that KW suspension kits are offered with TÃœV certificate, the engineers take into consideration that installation can be done without any further modifications. Once a problem appears while lowering, KW offers a solution which can be ordered together with the kit (i.e. control arms, pull rods, anti-roll bars etc.)

Did You Know - Bubble Tea Edition

5. You can judge how good a bubble tea shop is by the tapioca pearls.

“For me, the mark of a good bubble tea place is the tapioca pearls. Everyone has a personal preference but I like them to be quite chewy but still soft, and I like to be able to chew each pearl five or six times. If you have to chew the pearl 20 times then it’s too hard, and too chewy. If it breaks down in your mouth after two bites, then it’s probably a bit stale, or has been overcooked.

“We make our pearls fresh every two hours. The quality of the pearl is a very good gauge of whether the bubble tea shop is making things fresh and whether they care about the quality of their drink.”

11. If you want to look like a pro, there’s a trick to putting your straw in your drink.

“If you just bang your straw through the plastic, it will make the tea leak out of the hole. Instead, put your thumb on the top of the straw to make an airtight seal, then with confidence stab straight down. That’s the right way to put your straw in. When someone does that you can tell they’re a pro.”

All Car Owners Should Be Able To Do These Things

How To Do The Bare Minimum Of Car Maintenance In Six Easy Steps

Check Tires (Or “tyres” as the British incorrectly spell it.)

Tires are one of your car’s most important components. They are the only part that actually touches the ground (unless something has gone really quite wrong), and they affect just about every attribute of your car’s performance. So don’t cheap out when it comes time to buy new ones, and pay attention to the health of the ones you’ve got.

Make sure pressure is set to the car or tire’s specification, make sure that’s staying consistent (no leaks), and give your tires a physical inspection once in awhile to catch rot or damage sooner than later.

You’ve probably heard about the “penny test” where you place a penny in the valley of a tire tread to check the depth– if you can see all of Lincoln’s head, the tires are too worn. Your mileage may vary, but it’s even easier to tell if the sidewall is ok. Does it have cracks or chunks missing? No? It’s okay.

Check Oil

Being the lubricating lifeblood (and in some cases, cooling system) of your engine, you really want to make sure you don’t run out of this stuff.
Most cars have a dipstick at the engine that you can pull out, wipe off, stick back in, and inspect the tip of to see the current oil level. While the engine’s off, of course. There will be two little lines or markers on the tip of that stick– you want the dark liquid to be between them.

How much to add if it’s low? Google what your car needs specifically, but it often takes precisely one quart, a commonly sold single-bottle portion, to go from the bottom marker to the top “full” marker. You’ll want to add this in the big hole with the number “710” on it. Just kidding– that’s a little humor for the experienced mechanics who are hate-reading this. (Open your hood, you’ll get it.)

But pour carefully and slowly. An engine overfull with oil is in severe danger of destroying itself. As to what kind of oil you want; Google the owner’s manual if it’s not stickered on the that “710" cap!

Check Lights

Okay, here’s something even your five-year-old can do. In fact, it helps if you have another person to inspect your lights and see if they’re working since you can’t always park near a big mirror.

A Shocking Choice For The Car In The 2016 Xmas Catalog

2017 Infiniti Q60 glitters in gold for the Neiman Marcus Christmas catalog

It's that time of year again. The air is getting cooler, the leaves are changing colors, and Neiman Marcus has selected this year's car for its annual Christmas Book. The limited-edition ride is a 2017 Infiniti Q60 based on the 400-horsepower Red Sport 400 model.

What really sets this Neiman Marcus version apart from the average Red Sport is the striking paint job. Called Solar Mica, the paint looks a bit like a glossy gold leaf. Combined with the Gallery White leather interior with Silver Optic Fiber trim, this is an Infiniti that would be perfect for Yukon Cornelius. In addition to the color scheme, the car comes with an ivory leather weekend bag, an indoor car cover with Neiman Marcus branding, a plaque with the VIN number, and a certificate of authenticity. Oh, it also comes with a $63,000-price tag, which is a about $10,000 more than an entry level Red Sport 400 with rear-wheel drive.

Neiman Marcus will only offer 50 examples of this Infiniti, and it goes on sale at noon on November 2. Interested buyers can call to reserve one at (844) 367-6971. If you're serious about buying, you'll probably want that number on speed dial. The special edition Neiman Marcus cars tend to sell out fast. In 2009, 50 Jaguar XJLs sold out in just over four hours. In 2012, 12 McLaren MP4-12C Spiders flew out the door in two hours, and in 2006, 50 BMW M6 convertibles vanished in a stunning 92 seconds.

It's 1 Of The Best Anti-Theft Devices

Carjacking attempt foiled by pesky manual transmission

Manual transmissions apparently are the best theft deterrent.

According to KMOV, Dustin French was on his way back to his Benton Park home from a gas station around 11 PM on October 13th. When French pulled up to the curb outside of his home a silver Honda Accord quickly pulled in behind him. A passenger then hopped out, approached him, and flashed a gun.

French complied with the carjacker's demands. "I'm glad I didn't panic or threaten violence or make any quick moves," French said. "Kept my wits about me as best as I could. Asked thieves for instructions on what to do to prevent harm to myself."

But then a strange thing happened. The carjackers apparently left French's car behind and took off without stealing anything. French told KMOV he believes that they did so because his car has a manual transmission and the gunman, who St. Louis Police say was in his late teens or early-20s, couldn't drive one. Thankfully, French wasn't hurt and his Nissan is still safely in his possession.

People Need To Do These Things When Driving

Everyday Driving Habits That Could Save Your Life

Pretend you're driving a limo
  • Always be smooth, and try not to make any sudden, jarring movements in braking, turning, or acceleration. You'll be safer, because it takes concentration and planning to drive smoothly. You have to brake earlier, ease off the pedal somewhat before you actually get to your turn, and be vigilant for potholes, bumps in intersections, and other potential dangers to steer clear of or move through more slowly.
Look past the car in front of you
  • When you scan the road ahead, look multiple car lengths beyond the car in front of you. Look to the left and right of it, and even through the front windshield if you can. Seeing through the gaps in traffic allows your brain to process more information, since the big objects nearer to you are easily picked up by your peripheral vision. You'll likely start braking for dangerous situations even earlier than that car you're behind, and that's a very reassuring feeling.

Jonathan Quick out indefinitely for Kings

GM reportedly puts timeline at about three months for goalie's lower-body injury

Los Angeles Kings goalie Jonathan Quick had a non-surgical procedure for a lower-body injury Tuesday and is out indefinitely, the Kings said Wednesday.
General manager Dean Lombardi on Wednesday told the Los Angeles Times that Quick will be out for about three months.

Quick opted against surgery for what is believed to be a groin injury sustained in the final 30 seconds of the first period of the Kings' season-opening game against the San Jose Sharks on Oct. 12. Lombardi said last week that Quick's injury is in the same area as the strained groin that kept him out for almost two months in 2013 and confirmed it was not a knee injury.

A Lot Of People Would Like To Know, Too

What The Hell Is Pirelli Doing In Formula One?

What the hell is Pirelli doing in F1?

“We want to do F1 because its popularity places it as the number one motorsport category and it’s seen as the pinnacle of motorsport. For our brand positioning, as a prestige brand supplier, that makes a lot of sense. It’s also pushed us in ways we couldn’t have imagined when we entered F1 in 2011.”

How does Pirelli’s involvement with F1 translate to their street car business?

“The main benefit is the increase in simulation work that goes on with our tire design, particularly in the area of structural design. We use simulation in the analysis of our new tire models and how they work with various manufacturers cars. It’s the exact same simulations we use in F1 and the road car business is going very much in that direction as it looks for decreased development times. Honestly I envisage in 10 years time that probably all types of tires for road cars will be developed exclusively in this manner. F1 helps us to be at the leading edge of that.

Using simulation for development also means when you actually put the wheels on the ground of a new vehicle, that you get a tire that is very close or is much closer too what the final product is going to be therefore reducing both times and costs.

So our involvement in F1 does have a lot of benefits that are genuine technology boosts that translate to the road car. That’s not a marketing line. I won’t tell you that you can bolt on the set of F1 tires on your street car and go faster, but there are aspects of our top of the line street tire (the Trofeo R) that we were using seven or eight years ago in GT racing.

That's A Damn Good Question

Who Ultimately Is Responsible When A Self Driving Car Crashes?

Until recently, there was no question about who’s responsible for an automobile’s operation: the driver. One-hundred percent.

When driverless cars without a steering wheel or brake pedal start hitting the highway, your only role will be ordering the car where to go.

“There’s something we used to call split responsibility,” said Hod Lipson, director of Columbia University’s Creative Machines Lab. “If you give the same responsibility to two people, they each will feel safe to drop the ball. Nobody has to be 100 percent, and that’s a dangerous thing.”

Beer Can Often Lead To Great Ideas

How beer kegs helped create the modern pit stop

Perhaps most interesting is the story of how Gordon Murray, designer of the McLaren F1, and his crew devised the modern pit stop in the early 1980s. As the documentary explains, teams made sure to have long-lasting tires and carry enough fuel onboard for the race, since pit stops were slow. Murray, a member of the Brabham F1 team at the time, was looking for some way to reduce weight in the car. He realized that fuel was a major portion of the vehicle's weight, so he started working out how they could run a lighter car with less fuel – without losing the advantage in a pit stop.

The team's solution was interesting, to say the least. They rigged up a fuel system using pressurized beer kegs painted in the team's colors so they could pump 30 gallons of fuel into the car in just 3 seconds. The team also would take the opportunity to put fresh tires onto the car, which meant they needed a way to get them on quickly, as well as a way to keep the tires warm in the pit. They were able to do this by pre-loading wheel nuts into the air gun sockets and building a makeshift heated box to store the tires in. While engine reliability issues initially hid the benefits of Murray's strategy, those were overcome, and the team saw massive success.
