They Are Useful, But Space Needy

How To Decide When A 'Parts Car' Is Actually A Good Idea

A “parts car” is a spare car you have solely to harvest pieces from to keep another car alive. Sounds like a great thing to have, right? I thought so too, but in case you needed more convincing here’s the business case for a parts car. And a guide on how to find one.

Of course all this is dependent on your willingness to have the dead husk of a car on your property indefinitely, and the time to actually dismantle it. And the means to hawk the bits you don’t want.

Obviously you’re going to want your parts car to be as compatible as possible with your project, but even if you find a matching color scheme be extra careful to confirm that your new donor has the parts you want in decent condition. You are buying a dead car, after all.

These Are Suppose To Be The Best?

The United States of Burgers: The Best Burgers From Each of the 50 States

From onion-fried patties in Oklahoma, to slaw burgers in North Carolina, here are the classics you need to know around the country.

California - Pie 'n Burger
  • Address and phone: 913 E California Blvd, Pasadena (626-795-1123)
  • Website: pienburger.com
It’s the classic California burger counter of Beach Boys lyrics. The burger to get at this authentic throwback is the double cheeseburger. With its two thin, griddled patties, crisp lettuce, thousand island dressing tightly wrapped in wax paper, it personifies the ideal Californian burger experience. It’s nearly identical in structure to the Southern California cult favorite In-N-Out Double Double, but elevated.
Nevada - Fukuburger
  • Address and phone: 3429 S Jones Blvd, Las Vegas (702-262-6995)
  • Website: fukuburger.com
After a few years as a food truck, the Japanese-inspired burger hot spot landed on the Strip. Skip the expensive celebrity chef burgers all over town and head here for the Fukuburger, bursting with crazy umami and wasabi mayo. Ask for some “crack” sauce too for your damn fries in. There’s also a FukuMoco on the menu if you’d like a taste of a real Hawaiian burger (see Hawaii entry).

A Poor Man's Version Of The Revered B7 S4 Is Up For Sale!

For $12,000, Is This 2003 VW Passat W8 Wagon A Dope Ride?

The seller of today’s Nice Price or Crack Pipe VW says it’s one of only nine Passats in the U.S. with its drivetrain. You’d think if it’s that rare it’d have been left alone but instead it’s been lightly modded for your viewing pleasure.

This wagon doesn’t just have the fairly rare (only 10,000 in this car world-wide) W8 engine, it also rocks a six-speed manual and all of the cars that carried the W8 also featured VW’s 4motion AWD. If you’re thinking that this car tickles the balls of Audi territory you are correct. Everybody except VW thought that back when these were new as well.

It’s not entirely clear if Kate’s dating these British bros because of their accents or because she can never be sure if American men are using her for NFL connections, but in the clip she goes on to discuss about how she had to instantly dump one of these British suitors after he accidentally drop-kicked the Vince Lombardi Trophy with his steel-toed boots.

Rebranding Done Right, Audi Edition

Audi's Quattro division is now Audi Sport, and it has 8 new models on the way

Audi announced today that its Quattro GmbH performance and technology division will officially be renamed Audi Sport GmbH. The name change is the first since the division's introduction in 1983, and it should more clearly describe its function within the company and remove confusion with the Quattro all-wheel-drive system offered on all Audis, sporty or not.

With its new name, Audi Sport will continue to handle the brand's RS models, the R8, customer race cars, customized road cars, and Audi Sport lifestyle products. While the clearer new name is good news, we're more interested in the division's announcement that it will release eight new cars in the next 18 months.

New England Facility Promises to Be the Biggest Indoor Karting Track Ever

NASKART, a 110,000 square-foot karting center in eastern Connecticut, gives enthusiasts a full half-mile of track to play with.

Karting has been a pastime where all sorts of people—driving enthusiasts or not—could have fun with friends or family in a controlled, on-track environment. But indoor facilities can sometimes be tight and short, limiting the seat-time enjoyment. Not NASKART, though, because it's built a full half-mile indoor circuit just for go-karts.

The 110,00 square-foot facility, located in southeastern Connecticut, is claiming to be the largest institution of its kind, according to general manager Cody Browning.

"It's going to be the largest indoor multilevel track in the world," he said.
The racing will feature electrically powered karts that can reach speeds of up to 45 mph, with two tracks that combine to make the 0.5-mile full circuit.

Since NASKART also serves alcohol at its location, it will breathalyze every driver pre-race to make sure there's no drunken incidents. Because that would be bad.

Beastie Boys’ Licensed to Ill: Celebrating 30 Years of the Album Cuts

That’s right, three decades of holding it, hitting it, and fighting for our right to party, and it’s still an absolute rite of passage for hip-hop fans. It’s aged incredibly well, with the bigger singles (of which there’s several) still permeating soundtracks, sporting events and adolescent/teenage mayhem.

Did You Know - Wheels & Tires Edition

Things Every Self-Respecting Car Buff Should Know

It's not the tires' size that counts, it's how you use them
  • It stands to reason that wider tires give you more grip. If you as a driver don't know how to take advantage of that grip, though, or if your car's suspension isn't prepared for it, you're wasting much of a great tire's potential. Think of the tires as one part of an overall system that needs to be in balance with itself. You wouldn't use a store-bought marinade packet on a prime NY strip any more than you'd pull out the fancy China for chili dogs.
But the same isn't true of wheel diameter
  • Wider wheels can enable wider tires, but larger-diameter wheels very rarely provide an actual performance benefit. And that's perfectly fine. So long as you buy larger-diameter wheels for show, not performance or ride comfort, do what you want.

Hot Toyota Gazoo sub-brand poised to rival Mercedes-AMG and BMW M

Gazoo Racing motorsport arm has already produced hot models for the Japanese market; a faster Yaris could be on the way

Toyota is considering transforming its Gazoo Racing motorsport arm into a performance road car brand to rival the likes of BMW M and Mercedes-AMG.

In addition to co-ordinating Toyota’s international motorsport activities in, for instance, the World Endurance Championship and World Rally Championship, Gazoo Racing fettles road cars that are sold on the Japanese market. It sells limited-edition machines under two banners: GRMN (Gazoo Racing Masters of Nürburgring) and G’s.

Koei Saga, the boss of both Gazoo Racing and Toyota’s powertrain division, said it “is my intention” to increase Gazoo’s presence in road car markets other than Japan to promote the link between its racing and road car activities.

He said: “In Europe, the challenge is bigger because we have more competitors here, and it is also an issue of cost. However, I am very much working on that so we can have a brand like the M brand.”

This Thing Runs What?

JUN II: A 7-Second, Street-Driven GT-R

Built by Croydon Racing Developments in Sydney, Australia, JUN II is the culmination of years of development. It began as a hard-tuned street car called JUN, but in 2012 things got serious and three year’s worth of re-engineering followed. The goal was to push the RB engine and the BNR32 Skyline GT-R as a whole beyond what had ever been done before at CRD, and its achievements to date speak volumes. Not only has the car run a 7.89-second quarter-mile, it retains street trim and is regularly driven on the road.

Did You Know - 2017 Porsche 911 RSR Edition

6 Things I Found Out About The Mid-Engined Porsche 911 RSR

Last week, we sat down with Porsche motorsport vice president Dr Frank-Steffen Walliser at the LA Auto Show to find out more about the latest 911 RSR

It's an almost entirely different car

This fundamental change meant the Porsche motorsport team had to start pretty much from scratch. “Setting it up is completely different to the old car. That’s something we had to learn - aero settings, spring/damper settings, the rake of the car, how it behaves….It’s not so easy,” Walliser explains.

While the platform is the same, almost everything else is new. We’re talking new bodywork with new aero, entirely new suspension, and even a new engine, with the legendary Mezger unit retired and replaced with the same flax-six found in the 911 Cup.

Oh and on the subject of aero, that wing is derived from the 919 Hybrid’s. The top mount structure is all about giving a smoother surface on the underside of the wing, which Walliser tells us is the more sensitive side of the aero piece.

Weight distribution hasn't improved by as much as you might expect

Despite the engine now being in front of the rear axle, weight distribution hasn’t improved by a dramatic amount. “We’re talking about two to three per cent difference,” Walliser says, but while that may not sound like a huge amount to you or I, in the precise world of motorsport that’s a considerably improvement.

Crucially, weight distribution only tells part of the story. Having the engine’s mass more centralised will make the car easier to control, and there are packaging advantages too - the 2017 RSR is able to have a much larger and more effective diffuser than the old car since there isn’t a ruddy great flat-six in the way.

It has a longer wheelbase than the 911 GT1

The 2017 RSR technically isn’t the first 911 to be mid-engined. That honour goes to the 911 GT1 prototype racer of the 1990s, which was a 911 in name and little else.

But here’s a fun little pub fact for you: the new RSR’s lengthened wheelbase (increased by 60mm compared to the old car) is actually longer than the GT1’s. That’s progress for you.

Some Great Financial Advice

What Do the Wealthiest People Know That Others Don’t?

Math. The broke person really wanted a particular item but it was more than $100, and he or she didn’t have it. When the item went on sale for 20 percent off, he or she rushed to one of those payday advance places and borrowed the money to get it. The interest on those type of loans of course negated the savings. But the person didn’t care and justified it by thinking, “Oh well, it’s the same money anyway.” He didn’t realize that the problem wasn’t how he bought the item.

Above all, if you can commit to living within your means, your means will increase over time. Feeling broke today? Look at your paycheck. Now imagine you didn’t have to spend all of that on car payments and a house that’s bigger than what you need, and the credit card payments on all the stuff you bought to fill it. Just imagine that whole paycheck staying in your bank account and not going out the door to those payments. You aren’t so bad off anymore, are you?

Now imagine what your savings account would look like in just one year if you threw it all there and forgot about it. Because that’s where you could be if you thought about money differently.

Successful people know it’s not about how much you make; it’s about how you spend it.

Fight On, Golden Knights!

Vegas Golden Knights official team name

Owner Bill Foley announces decision five months after being awarded expansion franchise

The Vegas Golden Knights are officially the 31st team to join the NHL.

Exactly five months after Las Vegas was awarded an expansion team, owner Bill Foley announced the name and revealed the team logo Tuesday at Toshiba Place, just outside of T-Mobile Arena, where the Golden Knights will begin play in the 2017-18 season.
Before making the annoucement, Foley told the crowd what the name and logo would represent.

"Our logo and our name is really going to exhibit the highest element of the warrior class - the knight," Foley said. "The knight protects the unprotected. The knight defends the realm. The knight never gives up, never gives in, always advances, never retreats, and that's what our team is going to be."

This Guy's Car Fetish Is So Normal It's Actually Pretty Weird

All get used, all of them have manual transmissions.

But Hugie’s early birthday present to himself was an even deeper level of commitment to the Acura obsession– designing his garage to look an Acura dealership from the 1990’s to match the cars inside.

Some Non-Car Parts A Car Guy May Want

Absurdly Expensive Automotive Merchandise

Ferrari Ceramic Ashtray: $75.00

Ferrari is one of the most egregious offenders when it comes to overpriced branded products. While the price tag on this ashtray does not leave it out of reach of the average person, it's hard to fathom spending three quarters of a Benjamin just so you can dump ashes on the symbol of your cherished brand.

Bentley Tergus 37 Candle: $85.87

At current exchange rates, this Bentley candle comes in at $85. For that lofty price, it offers a bizarrely complicated scent. Bentley puts it best:
"Captures leather in layers of spice with iris wood, vibrant saffron, black pepper and frankincense with precious woods; resting in a base of tonka beans, vanilla, and patchouli."
Is that what wealth smells like? Save yourself the cash and visit a Yankee Candle instead.

Lamborghini Carbon Fiber Bynomio Suitcase: $17,388.00

This suitcase is one way you could store your clothing on a long trip. Or you could buy a new Honda Fit and pay someone to drive your clothes to your destination. And you'll get 52.7 cubic feet of cargo space instead of 5.8.
You can thank us later.

Liberty eyes night F1 race in Las Vegas

A Formula 1 night race around Las Vegas has been singled out as a key target for the sport over the next few years by its new owners Liberty Media.

With the American company having taken a 19.1 percent stake in F1, it is evaluating how best to make the sport more attractive for fans and generate greater revenue.

Liberty has already talked about the possibility of a bigger calendar, but its CEO Greg Maffei has now spoken specifically about the desire for one venue to happen.

"I particularly like the idea of a night race in Las Vegas," Maffei said during the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecoms conference in Barcelona this week.

F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone held talks with interested parties from Las Vegas earlier this year about a potential second USA race there alongside Austin, but the discussions have not appeared to progress far.

Nascar's Hallowed 7th Heaven Welcomes A New Member

Jimmie Johnson Wins Historic Seventh-Career NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Championship

With a victory in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Jimmie Johnson won his seventh series championship on Sunday night. Johnson joins Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt Sr. in the ranks of seven all-time Sprint Cup championships.

The title ties Johnson with Earnhardt and Petty for most all-time Sprint Cup championships, and Johnson will be the final winner in the era of the series’ Sprint sponsorship. NASCAR is in talks with sponsors to take over the title sponsorship when the series returns in February.

Welcome To L.A.

This Is The Realest Car We Saw At The LA Auto Show

We spotted this car down the block from the official Jalopnik AirBnB. Let nobody say we’ve gone Hollywood.

As you can see it’s an end-of-the-Clinton-years Chrysler 300M, crashed, smashed, curbed, wheels stolen, windows smashed and branded with the warning “snitch.”

The guys across the street who owned the ‘70s Ford Maverick laughed about it and said the car had been there for about two months. Cops drive by pretty regularly but nobody bothers it.

Another old Polish guy who moved into the neighborhood about 30 years ago (he said he fled his country back in ‘75, left Brooklyn some years later) said the guy was lucky he only had his car trashed. “At least he didn’t get a bullet,” he offered.

This little neighborhood (not quite Koreatown, I don’t think) used to see shootings every week, the guy explained, about 20-25 years ago. It’s cleaned up since they put the new school in down the way, but there are still extremely real signs of extreme realness to be found.

According to the Boston Globe, the origin of the rice ball sandwich can be traced back to a manga (Japanese comic) series from the mid-1980s called Cooking Papa.
