These Traits Have Benefited My Success

10 Signs Your Personality Is Intimidating Others

1. Your word is good.
  • Honesty is something that you value big time. If you say you will do something you always follow through.
2. You are straightforward.
  • You always speak your mind and do not care who gets upset. Lying is never an option.
5. You are strong-willed.
  • You are focused and will go to extra lengths to make something happen.
6. You do not like people who complain.
  • Complaining is something that makes you mad, you would rather work alone than with someone who spends the whole day complaining. You don’t have time for their shit and will not pick up their extra weight without letting them know where they can shove their complaints.
7. You do not tolerate willful ignorance.
  • You are open minded, yes, but you will not entertain anyone who is judgmental. You will either walk away from them and their ignorance or lose your patience with them and let them have a piece of your mind.

No One Wants To Buy An Alfa Romeo Giulia

The Alfa Romeo Giulia was supposed to herald the triumphant return of the legendary Italian brand to the American market. Unfortunately, Alfa’s plan to shake up the luxury car game isn’t working out.

According to GoodCarBadCar.net, Alfa has only managed to sell 2,482 Giulia sedans (including the Quadrifoglio) in 2017. You could compare those numbers to the segment stalwarts like the Audi A4 at 15,379 units, BMW 3 Series at 22,584 units, or the Mercedes C-Class that sold 35,436 units, but that only paints half the picture.

Here’s some much more depressing figures: Lexus sold 3,311 CT200h hatchbacks, a car the company is killing off in the American market. Acura managed to beat the Giulia by selling 3,958 ILX sedans—a vehicle that has one of the lowest customer satisfaction ratings in its segment. Finally, Cadillac was able to score 6,024 customers for the ATS, which is a good car, but a sales failure by industry standards.

And it’s certainly not a supply issue—there are plenty of Giulias for sale. According to Cars.com, there are currently, 2,209 listings nationwide.

Did You Know - Long Beach, CA Edition

Ten Things You May Not Know About Long Beach

It Was The Starting Point For Social Security In The U.S.

In 1933, an American physician (and Long Beach resident) named Francis Townsend penned a lengthy "Letter to the Editor" to address poverty among the elderly. That article was published in the Long Beach Press-Telegram. It struck a chord with readers and led directly to a formalized plan (developed by Townsend himself) to enact a sales tax to give everyone over 60 a pension of $200 a month. As noted in the L.A. Times, the plan "drew millions of adherents, a nationwide flood of publicity and the nervous concern of politicians in Washington."

Ultimately, President Franklin D. Roosevelt would flout Townsend's idea and develop his own social security system, which was decidedly less generous (it maxed out at $41.20 a month). But it's undoubtable that Townsend had forced the issue for the U.S. government, and had popularized the idea of social security (and thus easing its passage). As cited at the Social Security Administration's website (which offers a bizarrely thorough takedown of Townsend's 80 year-old plan), Roosevelt was quoted as saying that "Congress can't stand the pressure of the Townsend Plan" unless it had "a solid plan which will give some assurance to old people of systematic assistance upon retirement."

It's Got A Japanese Garden That You Probably Don't Know About

Certainly, the Japanese Garden at the Huntington Library has long been hailed as one of the most picturesque gardens in the L.A. area. Fewer Angelenos are aware that, at another corner of the county, there's another Japanese garden that's similarly lush and heart-achingly beautiful.

The Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden, nestled inside the campus of Cal State Long Beach, is 1.3 acres of meticulous landscaping. Introduced in 1981 after more than three years of planning (which saw its principal architect—Edward Lovell—taking repeated trips to Japan for research) the garden contains such botanical wonders as laceleaf Japanese maples and pink cloud cherries. The spread is anchored by a sprawling pond filled with koi fish.

The garden is also spun as an educational tool; there's a volunteer docent program, and organizers host events such as classes on tree pruning. The space has long been popular with CSULB students and (ugh) wedding photographers—it's certainly worth your while if you're looking for a tranquil space to reflect on all your life decisions.

Will Other Brands Follow Suit?

Nike To Start Selling Shoes On Amazon And This Will Have Major Reverberations

The agreement will have Nike provide product directly to Amazon and in return Amazon will police and prohibit counterfeit and third-party sales of Nike products. Amazon has been gearing up for this significant partnership by cracking down on counterfeit product and the proliferation of unauthorized third-party sales on the site already. Amazon already began notifying third-party sellers that they have until July 13 to stop selling certain Nike products.

What’s not known is what Nike products will be available on Amazon. Zappos, which is owned by Amazon, doesn’t sell premium Nike brands such Jordan, Air Max or Nike signature basketball products. Experts believe that premium Nike products will not be offered on Amazon, to give other retailers that Nike has a relationship to survive. Sports apparel retailers such as Dicks Sporting Goods, Footlocker, Finish Line, Hibbett Sports all saw their stocks drop on Thursday.

Nike is enchanted by Amazon more than ever since sales in North America have been stagnate, and this month they were forced to cut 1,400 jobs, or about 2 percent of its workforce. Plus traffic to brick-and-morter retail locations are on declining at a worrying pace.

About Damn Time, Honda! But Too Little, Too Late?

Honda dreaming up Civic Type R variants - with more power, AWD More power and AWD are possibilities.

If, for some reason, the Type R isn't powerful enough for you, or you don't like the front-drive layout, Honda might still find a way to make you a Type R customer. According to Automotive News, Honda is planning a number of variants to broaden the appeal and extend sales once the first enthusiasts have already made their purchases.

The first candidate for a special Type R would be a sportier, more powerful version. Honda's chief engineer for the Civic lineup, Hideki Matsumoto, told Automotive News that a more civilized grand touring version is also under consideration. Perhaps most interesting is the possibility of an all-wheel-drive Type R that would compete more directly with the likes of the Volkswagen Golf R, Subaru WRX STI, and Ford Focus RS. So, while the wait is over for the Type R's arrival in the US, the slow burn of the rollout is just beginning as Honda works to give the model staying power in the marketplace.

This Is A Good Read

The Radial Tire Lesson for Silicon Valley

Smartphones and computers last longer than ever. Can their makers adapt?

In the 1980s and ’90s, technology was changing so fast that a new computer was almost disposable. You upgraded every few years. But as innovation slowed, they lasted longer, which meant fewer people buying computers.

Bill Gates was worried about this all the way back in 1991. “When radial tires were invented,” he said in an interview, “people didn’t start driving their cars a lot more, and so that means the need for production capacity went way down, and things got all messed up. The tire industry is still messed up.”

During the dot-com boom, Mr. Gates invoked the analogy again. “Every time I read about optic fibers or wireless, I say to myself, ‘Wow, that sounds like radial tires,’ ” he said. “When they got radial tires did people drive four times as much just because the tires lasted longer? No, the industry shrank.”

That fear has come true. When was the last time you upgraded your PC? Exactly. They run and run. Sales of personal computers peaked in 2011 at 365 million. Five years later, only 260 million shipped, down almost 30%. Tech companies continue to post relentless performance increases and cost improvements, except they show up elsewhere—in cloud computing, artificial intelligence and speech recognition.

It’s true that tablet computers caused some of the PC’s decline, but they’ve peaked, too. Steve Jobs introduced the iPad in 2010. Sixty-eight million were sold in 2014. Last year Apple moved barely 45 million, down a third. The company is on pace to sell even fewer this year. These tablets don’t wear out, and the new ones don’t have enough additional features or applications to entice users to upgrade. It’s a radial tire.

Chop Shops Never Die, They Only Evolve

Police Bust 5 For Meth Lab Found At Golf Cart Chop Shop In Retirement Community In Florida

We take you to The Villages, an infamous (for all the wrong reasons including public senior sex in the middle of the community) and gigantic retirement community of approximately 157,000 people in Sumter County, Florida. The preferred transportation in the senior citizen mini-city is golf carts. The preferred crime in The Villages is golf cart theft. One golf cart theft ring was stealing 30 golf carts a month, with some of them worth as much as $9,000 and they were selling them for $600-$1,200. One group not only operated a golf cart chop shop, but also ran a meth operation. Sumter County deputies performed an early-morning raid of a home in the retirement community, after numerous complaints from residents about stolen golf carts.

They police seized drugs, weapons, and discovered the golf cart chop shop. Undercover deputies had bought drugs at the residence three different times. Authorities discovered golf cart parts, including windshields, wheels, seat cushions, and tires. The five people that were arrested are Kenneth Ray Padgett, 53; Charlotte L. Gajewsky, 42; William Anthony Wade Romska, 45; Michael Edward Witkowski, 63; and Unrath, 43. The charges include sale of methamphetamine, keeping or maintaining a drug shop, possession of weapon/ammo by convicted felon, possession of heroin, possession of new legend drug without a prescription.

Cars Are Just Assets, Not Investments

Activist investors are wasting their time with automakers

Wall Street is fighting a winless war. It thinks it can pressure GM and Ford into making major changes that will boost their stock prices. But the hardest thing in the world to change is public perception. And the public perception of car companies right now is that they're a terrible place to invest. That's not going to change anytime soon.

In the past five years, GM and Ford have enjoyed soaring sales and record profits. But as their bottom lines grew, their stock prices fell. That tells you all you need to know. If the stock market didn't reward these companies for a huge run-up in sales and profits then, it never will.

I Want To Know The Returns On Investment

This Is What A Subaru Impreza With $250,000 Of Modifications Looks Like

This 'Blobeye' Impreza has had the price of a house invested in it, and it's won Best in Show at quite a few exhibitions

Never has the saying ‘you can sleep in a car, but you can’t race a house’ been more apt. This 2002 Subaru Impreza ‘Blobeye’ has had roughly $250,000 invested in it. Many people would buy a house with that kind of cash, but Alex Witkin spent that figure modifying one of his cars almost beyond recognition.

Almost every part of the car has been changed or upgraded. The engine has been built completely from scratch, and the engine bay has had a lot of work done to achieve the end result. It has a custom-fabricated 10-point roll cage, the interior has been completely overhauled and it’s even been converted to a right-hand-drive car. As the car is in America and was LHD originally, we don’t really understand that change.

As you can see from the video, the car is completely road legal, but mostly used as a show car and to promote his business.

Is it a waste of money, or well spent?

I Believe These Character Traits Are Vital

21 Things Every Gentleman Should Know How To Do By The Time He Turns 30

Some basics and also some not-so-basics to help you out.

4. How to make a budget and stick to it.

Making a budget is important (unless you're rich, in which case you can skip this or you already know this, which is why you're rich). But you should be aware of how much money you have coming in and how much is going out.

Budgets will also help you plan for rainy days when you need extra cash or to save for a vacation that you really want to go on. They are super-duper important. In today's hyperconnected world, there are a bunch of budget-planning apps that are easy-peasy to use. Start by exploring the App Store on your phone, and peruse the "finance" section to find one that works best for you.

5. How to tie a tie.

OK, so: I'm 29 and I don't know how to tie a tie. I know it's bad, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't know how to do it. I'm fucked if I have to go to a wedding, but you don't have to be like me. If you don't know how to tie a tie, just watch this video and practice and you'll be a pro in no time.

6. How to negotiate:

Negotiating at work is very, very useful. You should feel confident in your skill set and what you bring to the table professionally — and for that reason you should be able to convey your value and receive fair compensation for your worth. Knowing how to skillfully do that is tough, though, so study up. The more you do it, the better you'll get at it. (Negotiating and compromising is also something that will get you a long way if you're in a relationship.)

A New Buyer Has Emerged

Harley-Davidson enters race to buy rival Ducati

LONDON - U.S. motorcycle maker Harley-Davidson is lining up a takeover bid for Italian rival Ducati, potentially bringing together two of the most famous names in motorcycling in a deal that could be worth up to $1.7 billion, sources say.
Indian motorcycle maker Bajaj Auto and several buyout funds are also preparing bids for Ducati, which is being put up for sale by German carmaker Volkswagen.
A deal with Harley-Davidson would bring together the maker of touring bikes like the Electra Glide that are symbolic of America with a leading European maker whose high-performance bikes have a distinguished racing heritage.
Milwaukee-based Harley-Davidson has hired Goldman Sachs to work on the deal, one source familiar with the matter said, adding tentative bids are expected in July.

Great Leaders Need To Make Great Decisions

The decision wasn’t exactly what I was hoping for, nor what any of the SVPs was arguing for. It was more of a compromise than I’d wanted to see or any of the SVPs in the debate wanted to see. It made none of us happy.

Nonetheless, it was Larry’s decision and everyone got some work to do to support Larry’s tweak to the product for launch.

On that day, I felt sympathy for Larry. Yes, he is CEO of one of the most powerful and respected companies on this planet (Google). We’d all expect him to be powerful. Yet, his decision was a compromise, because the overall system and the overall dynamics are very complex. I’m sure that’s not what he wanted; his hands were tied too.

Observing Larry’s hands being tied, in his own company, gave me an extra layer of appreciation for checks and balances. Now several years later, at my own startup Leap.ai, there are constantly moments where I’d remember Larry’s face on that day when I sat right next to him.

I Hope This Helps The Sport Go More Mainstream

FIA to host the first Intercontinental Drifting Cup in Japan

The FIA (Federation Internationale de l'Automobile) organizes the Formula 1 World Championship, the World Rally Championship, and the World Endurance Championship. The move to host a drifting competition gives the sport a new level of legitimacy - and the FIA a new and younger audience it can capitalize on.

There are some who still look down on drifting. It is an unusual form of motorsport, combining elements of sports like skateboarding and BMX biking. Events are judged on form and style rather than raw speed and lap times. That alone sets it apart from the FIA's other championships, but the organization has brought in some experienced leaders to help with things.

Sunpros, the promoter that popularized D1 Grand Prix worldwide, has been announced as the promoter for the Intercontinental Drifting Cup. Isao Saita, the president of Sunpros, is one of the founders of D1 Grand Prix. The competition will take place over two days, from Sept. 30 to Oct. 1. Exact details on competitors and final regulations haven't been revealed, but the FIA promises more news over the coming months.

Luckily for us, Nestle doesn’t plan to sell its signature Toll House brand, so our beloved chocolate chip cookies are safe (for now).

What Is The Difference?

What Is The Difference Between Mayonnaise And Aioli?

Mayonnaise, loosely defined, is an emulsion of neutral-flavored oil like canola, egg yolk, vinegar and/or lemon juice and sometimes a dash of powdered mustard to bring out the flavor and help the emulsion stay together. Aioli, on the other hand, hails from the southern French region of Provence, and begins not in a blender but with a mortar and pestle and several cloves of garlic. When the garlic is pounded to a paste, it's whisked into the traditional preparation of egg yolk, lemon juice, mustard and olive oil instead of canola (which adds olive oil's fruity aroma into the mix).

I Ask, Does Anyone Still Care?

Now in its fourth season, there's no end in sight for the Dodgers' TV blackout

There is no end in sight to the dispute between DirecTV and Charter Communications, which inherited the mess when it bought Time Warner Cable. (Charter sells cable service under the Spectrum brand name.)

This is the fourth season of the Dodgers’ television blackout. The team has won the National League West in each of the previous three seasons. Meanwhile the team-owned SportsNet LA channel that carries the games has been unavailable in millions of homes in Southern California that don’t have Spectrum.

How many fans switched to Spectrum in April and May after the 10-game KTLA package?

Charter won’t say.

Charter is pitching Spectrum as the only place to see the Dodgers — “No Spectrum? No Dodgers!” — in its advertising. Are there a lot of Dodgers fans that have not switched?

Yes. The KTLA broadcasts were seen in an average of 105,000 DirecTV households and another 20,000 AT&T U-Verse households — in sum, half again as many households as see an average SportsNet LA broadcast. (AT&T is the parent company of DirecTV.)

Until DirecTV loses a critical mass of subscribers because it does not air the Dodgers, industry analysts say, there is little incentive for the company to pay Charter for the right to carry SportsNet LA.

So none of those Dodgers fans have complained to DirecTV about missing their team on TV?

Sure they have. They might even threaten to switch to Spectrum. But, whether the fans do not actually want to deal with the hassle of changing providers, or whether DirecTV persuades them to stay by giving them free NFL Sunday Ticket or other goodies, the bottom line is that too few have switched to affect DirecTV’s bottom line.

How did the Dodgers get into this mess?

Time Warner Cable agreed to pay the Dodgers a record $8.35 billion over 25 years in exchange for the exclusive right to sell SportsNet LA to other cable and satellite providers. But no carrier besides TWC and Charter agreed to carry SportsNet LA, with DirecTV the most prominent outlet to just say no.

Are the fans stuck with this contract for the next 21 years? Are the Dodgers exploring how they can modify the deal, or walk away from it in search of a deal that would end the blackout?

The Dodgers say it’s premature to conclude this deal doesn’t work if DirecTV won’t negotiate in what the team considers good faith.

He told Sky Sports: “We had a big conversation at the end of the year last year and he didn’t like it. I said ‘you gotta decide are you going to be a Kardashian or are you going to be a golf pro? You’re the king of social media, you’re all over these snap chats and all these things.

“He’s got a trainer he works out tremendously with and he’s worked unbelievable with his golf swing. He’s gone back to winning tournaments again – get rid of those Kardashians.
“The young man is ready to go. Whether it happens today or not, he’s going to win some majors but this would be a good time to start.”
Harmon’s sternness with Fowler may be in response to Rickie spending time with his now official girlfriend, smoking hot pole vaulter Allison Stokke.

Did You Know - Shake Shack Edition

10 Things We Never Knew About Shake Shack

4. The ShackSauce Recipe Is Secret . . . . . ish

  • Even though they won't give up the official secret recipe, they give a "close enough" version in the book. Combine ½ cup Hellman’s mayonnaise, 1 Tbsp. Dijon mustard, ¾ tsp. Heinz ketchup, ¼ tsp. kosher dill pickling brine, and a pinch of cayenne pepper. Add it to a classic smash burger, and you're in business.

6. Spicy ShackSauce Exists

  • When developing the Chick'n Shack, they thought about making ground chicken burgers or grilled chicken sandwiches, but ultimately Meyer wanted fried chicken—with ShackSauce. They developed a spicy ShackSauce, but it never made it into restaurants because they worried people wouldn't be able to tell the two sauces apart. Instead, they went with a buttermilk ranch for the fried-chicken sandwich that took two years to perfect.

8. There's an Official Shake Ratio

  • If you get a hankering for a shake in the middle of the night, just blend together 1½ cups custard (or your favorite premium ice cream, they say) and ½ cup milk. If you want it flavored, add 2 Tbsp. of your favorite sauce and ⅓ cup milk instead of plain ol' milk.

Still A Long Way To Go To Get Out Of The Foxhole

U.S. Open TV analysis: Fox’s technology outpaces its announcers

Where Fox still has work to do is with its announcers, which tend to be overexposed during long days, such as the opening rounds of the U.S. Open. Fortunately, there’s a solution, which I’m here to offer.

• One of Fox’s best moments Friday was a terrific little feature in which Zach Reineking, Erin Hills’ director of course operations, explained how the course barters hay for furniture with the local Amish community. The feature was short, it wasn’t intrusive, and it told me something interesting that I didn’t know about the club.

• How long is Fox going to continue the failed Holly Sonders Experiment? Last year I wrote that when Fox anchors say, “Let’s go down to Holly,” my thought is, “Let’s not.”

Bottom line: she stinks on TV. I don’t question Sonders’ golf knowledge. She played Division 1 college golf, so she knows the game. She’s just not cut out for the job.

Sonders was fine five years ago in her very limited role on Golf Channel’s “Morning Drive,” but she’s asked to do far too much at Fox. I think a friend had it right when he said Sonders tries too hard to be a personality (“golf’s Vanna White” was his description). But she’s not a personality. She lacks an easy manner on camera, she’s not spontaneous, and she’s not amusing.

She also doesn’t seem particularly competent. On Friday, in a segment with architect Gil Hanse, Sonders couldn’t bring up a graphic of No. 14. “I have never been friends with this thing,” Sonders said of the machine. “Three years now and I still can’t get it figured out.”

Here’s my crazy, completely off-the-wall suggestion: Remove Holly and put someone in that job who can call up the proper graphic.

What It Takes To Be A Race Car Driver

15 things no one tells you about being a professional racing driver

Being a professional racing driver is a dream job, but there are some things you just aren't prepared for before you live it.

1. You need better boardroom skills than Alan Sugar

Motor racing is very expensive - and it’s getting tougher and tougher to earn a living from. To fund my Formula Renault campaign I had five or six personal sponsors.

Sponsorship has changed from just having a sticker on the car. Now you really have to offer them value, you have to put the deals together - and obviously the stronger business case you can put to them, and the stronger it actually works in reality, the more chance you have of keeping sponsors for a long time.

Once you have them on board you have to keep them happy, entertain them at the track, keep them up to date with everything that you’re doing, get as much media coverage as possible for them - and make B2B introductions to try and generate more business for them.

You see some guys who have retained sponsors for 20 years over their whole career, and that’s what I’m trying to build.

4. You're not only a driver, you're also a runner or a cyclist

Every top driver has to be super fit and lean. Almost everyone I know is either a cyclist or runner.

I can be in the car for up to three or four hours at a time so I figure I need to be out running for at least a couple of hours and get that heart rate so of like 130/140 or even 150 which is what we’ve measured it to be in the car.

I visit a specialist racing drivers’ fitness facility called Pro Performance once or twice a week as they really know the specific fitness needs we have.

When I’m not with them I’ll be out on the road running every day, and I’ll do anything from 10k in 40 minutes to up to a half marathon distance.

8. There are lots of fun things you can’t do anymore . . . . .

The team does not want you getting injured and being unable to drive the car so they put it in your contract that you are not allowed to do various things like horse riding, white water rafting, scuba diving, hand gliding, para gliding, contact sports, bungee jumping and skiing.

Rugby is the hardest one for me. I played it at school and a lot of my friends still play but I have to watch from the sidelines.

It’s just not worth the risk of getting crunched and breaking an arm. It just doesn’t go down very well with the team if you can’t race because you were doing something stupid the weekend before.

12. You will end up buying a lot of doughnuts

There are more than 40 people in the team - I am just one of them, and without them I would not have a car to race.

I might do a race and hopefully get on the podium, spray the champagne and then get a flight home, but they will be there until the next day, packing away the garage and stripping down the car, before doing it all again in reverse at the next race.

It means just as much to them if we win as it does to me, so as a driver you work hard to forge that bond with them.

We have done things like karting challenges and paint-balling with them - even small things like making sure I always bring in a load of Krispy Kremes when I visit the factory. It all helps.

14. You will have to write your own encyclopaedia - yes really

After each weekend I make a note of everything that happened with the car: all the technical changes we made, how I drove each corner, what gear I was in - everything.

At home I have now got an encyclopaedia of all the tracks that I’ve ever been to, in all the different cars, and I know, for example, that for turn 1 at Silverstone I need to brake at 90 metres.

It might be three or four years before I go back to a certain track and and I’m obviously not going to remember what gear I was in at the third corner so I note it down, then I update it each time I drive the track.

I think a lot of top guys do do it too. The higher up you go, the more you have to try and find every little edge you can.

Did You Know - Ebi (Shrimp) Edition

What Are The Different Types Of Shrimp Used In Japanese Cuisine?

Sakura-ebi
  • This translucent pink shrimp translates to “spring-season shrimp,” and it’s caught in the Suruga Bay of the Shizuoka Prefecture of Japan. It can be shipped fresh to NYC but only around May, as it is very seasonal. “Sakura-ebi can only be served raw when it is super fresh,” adds Kousaka. “It just does not last fresh for a long period.” So just how is it usually prepared? Saito lists dried or fried kaki-age (fritter) as the two most common preparations.
Shiro-ebi
  • Imagine a whiter, smaller, slimier version of ama-ebi and you’re envisioning shiro-ebi. The tiniest of all the species on this list — a single piece of sushi or sashimi contains multiple little shrimps — shiro-ebi “has been very popular among Americans recently,” reports Kousaka, who uses ones sent over from the Toyama prefecture of Japan. “Even when they are shipped frozen (with a special technique), they never get too liquid-y, which is a unique feature compared to other shrimp eaten raw.” Even more impressive? Each of the miniature shrimps is “cleaned piece by piece by hand before being shipped to the U.S.” Talk about exhaustive labor!
